My 1st experience with Indian food was at the "Taj Mahal" , NYC, East Village. I've been back there a couple times, but wanted to find a good Indian restaurant closer to home. Read the reviews for several places in Pittsburgh, chose the Taj Mahal. I was not disappointed. The beef curry was excellent and I had enough to take some home. I want to try the various chicken dishes, as this restaur...
In my opinion, Pittsburgh is one of the livable towns for this reason ? it boasts of a top rated Indian Restaurant named ? Taj Mahal?, unparallel in the entire country, may be the entire world would be an understatement (it would not be an exaggerated statement). The name ?Taj Mahal? originated from the famed ?Taj Mahal? in Agra, India. (Taj means unsurpassed). So also is this restaurant. The unb...
I decided to try Taj Mahal out today with my daughter after reading several good and a few not so good reviews on this site. I have to say the less than stunning reviews that i read must have been from some pretty uneducated diners! As it was my first trip to this restaurant we decided to try the buffet to experience as many dishes as we could. Normally I prefer to order off the menu since buffe...
This restaurant sucked. My first complaint: the decor and atmosphere. The first thing someone should think when they enter a restaurant is: "ah, this will be a pleasant dining expierience" not something along the lines of "one of my grandparents had a basement that looked something like this." Second: drinks. At a normal restaurant, waiters walk about and if they spot an empty glass, they offer t...
Went here last night with my fiance, at the urging of some friends.. I was a little hesitant about trying Indian food originally (you never know what you'll get), but Taj Mahal really erased all of my doubt.. We both tried the Lamb Vindaloo and it was amazing.. Coupled with the delicious Garlic Nan, I think it was one of the best meals I have had the pleasure of enjoying in a long time.. The menu...
I love the Taj..I have been coming here with my family from Wheeling WV almost every weekend.. We look forward to it all week as the food is always great, probably the best in Pittsburgh if not Pennsylvania.. WV lacks sorely in good Indian cuisine but the Taj really fills the void.. The Sethi family is always so hospitable and sends extra food home with us every time we leave.. You have to try th...
The Taj is a little gem hidden in the North Hills.. Well not hidden I suppose because it is easily the most popular Indian restaurant in the tri-state area.. The dinner buffet on Mondays and Thursdays is a great way to get to sample the cuisine if you are new to Indian food.. I recommend the Veg Kormas and the terrific Reshmi Kebabs.. My wife and seven year old son love this place, we drive out f...
My husband and I went for the weekend buffet for the first time yesterday and found that it satisfies both my desire for huge variety of veggie dishes and buttery palak paneer, and his for hot fresh breads and good meats. There was a mix of Northern and Southern Indian dishes. The butter chicken sauce wasn't all that (I've had better at India Garden, Maharaja, and Tamarind) but the rest was so go...
I have recently moved to the U.S From the UK to the greater pittsburgh area. I have visited this restaurant twice as the first experience was horrible. They give you too much food that does not taste very good and it is over priced. We gave it a few months and tried again and on the second visit the staff were unproffesional and pushy and the food was worse than the first time. The popadoms w...
Used to like the place -the last 2 experiences have not been good due to a pushy waiter trying to convince us to try new dishes. The Lamb chops they asked to try was not good and over priced. During one visit asked for gulabjan and gave us an over-priced gulabjan with with cream. The regualar one does not have cream and tastes great. Now, always its an upsell, which I am tired off.
Will not reco...
I love this restaurant, because I love Indian cuisine. The Taj Mahal offers very authentic Indian cuisine. Unlike any other I have found here in the western part of PA. You need to try the koftas - excellent. I have not found anything here I haven't enjoy eating. The prices are great and the service is so quick and friendly. I highly recommend this place by far.
I'm not Indian so I can't tell you whether it's very authentic, but I think it is. The owners and most of the staff are from India. The food is amazing!!! Dreamy, creamy, healthy, flavorful. Go for the lunch buffet some time. Every week there is some new dish as well as the great old regulars. Don't miss the deserts. Only problem: water. Sometimes they aren't attentive about water. If yo...
I used to like this place since the curry is good. However, the last time I went with my girlfriend, the waiter conned us into ordering the shrimp appetizer that was "on the house, and that they were giving to everyone" (lies) and lamb chops that were inedible. It just looked like they were trying to clear the kitchen of their old food that was going bad. Even worse, my girlfriend was going to pa...
Taj Mahal was voted the best Indian restaurant in Pittsburgh the past 5 years, simply look at the awards on the counter. I commute from the South Hills weekly for the Monday night dinner buffet, the value for the food is great.. The food itself is the best I have tasted in Pittsburgh, and possibly in several other states as well. I bring my family here as often as possible, and my kids love the f...
Apparently many of the users on this site have no idea whatsoever as to what constitutes good Indian food. Being from India, and having lived in 4 (FOUR) major cities in the US, I can claim quite honestly that Taj Mahal has the best, and most authentic Indian food I have had the pleasure of indulging in. Contrary to another post I found the restaurant spotless and the service terrific and persona...
As a chef, there are a few things I look for in the front of the house that send up red flags about what might be going on in the back of the house.
The small bowls of chutneys were recycled from other tables, and filthy. When they poured me and my girlfriend water, hers had an insect in it. Mine had no ice.
I understand and adore the conce[pt of a small out of the way restaurant, but even ...
I have no idea what the poster claiming the Taj serves a mockery of Indian food means.. This is possibly the best and most authentic Indian food I have had the pleasure of eating, which says a lot considering I have been to India many times for business... The Sethi family does a tremendous job of managing the place and serving amazing food.. I recommend it to all!
PROS: Authentic Indian food,...
There are very few restaurants in which the owners themselves are involved every day. The Taj Mahal on Mcknight Rd is one of the very few restaurants that still has that taste of home cooked food with friendly service. The interiors are not that good...however the food and service are superior. I dont know why anyone would have anything bad to say about this place...there simply are not many rest...
Recently, I went to this restaurent with my family. The Food was great and Service is excellent. I will definitely recommand TajMahal restaurent to my friends.
I have always landed up getting stale food at this place.
Very greasy food and the meat tastes like rubber. The place makes a mockery of one of the best cuisines of the world.
The table wear is always dirty and you need to ask for a new set.
Not sure what the kitchen conditions are in a place like this.
The staff is unprofessional. It is unfortunate there are no other South Asian restaurants ...
Overall, this is a great restaurant.
The interior leaves a lot to be desired, but it's not "sticky" or "shady" like the other posters claimed.
Good Indian food, and they have a nice lunch buffet which was recently expanded. The mango juice is good, and the tandoori chicken could be one of the best buffet items.
Service is good, and the people there are friendly to children. Few employees...
Trust me you dont want to eat at this place! Apart from the interior being extemely shady, the service is horrible, outrageous prices and I bet you can get better food at a shelter. Totally wasted my time at this place, please dont waste yours. If you are into wasting money and not getting what you pay for, then this place is for you!
I find Taj Mahal very good. They don't give you americanized indian food. They probably have toned down the heat, but it is still spicy. I think this is one of the best indian restaurants in the burgh.
