  10. Food, view and service excellent - watch out for valet
We have dined here a few times. We find the service impeccable, and the food has been great every time we have been here. Often, we will just have hors d'oeuvres in the lounge and enjoy the view. However, we have seen valet at times be quite aggressive with the vehicles, and are often less than patient. We did complain, and the manager was very apologetic and advised it would be handled. I was ve...

put all the glitz and glamor and this is place just boils down to an overpriced restaurant that serves average tasting food. the view from the restaurant is nice but I would not consider the dining experience romantic.

  12. Never Disappointed
I have dined here many times and I have never had a bad experience. We always have great service and the food never disappoints. Even if you aren't able to sit by a window, there truly isn't a bad seat in the house. Definately get the crab cakes even if it's for an appetizer.

  13. Great food, a great view, and poor service await you at this restaurant on Mt. Washington.
Great food, a great view, and poor service await you at this restaurant on Mt. Washington. We started our meal at 8PM and didn't finish until after midnight, having to wait an hour between courses. There was very little attention during the gaps. As the evening grew later, it was clear that the staff was much more interested in preparing for the next day than catering to their diners. We event...

  14. Best crabcakes!
I LOVE this place-- everytime I want a romantic night out in the city, I take a ride up the Duquesne Incline and eat at Monterey Bay. The view is amazing, the menu and wine selection is impressive, and the food is delicious, especially the crab cakes, which are not fried and are the best I've ever tasted. It is a little pricey, but definitely worth it-- they fly their fish in fresh daily. Love it...

  15. Definately OVER RATED EVERYTHING
Went here once it was bad. Went again it was still bad. Over rated-Food, ediable, but not excellent & nor extroidnary , especially for the high end prices. Sloooooooooooooow service even if their not busy, professional, but toward the not so friendly side! Atmosphere is about the only thing that it has going for them. A lot of other places downtown that are better!

  16. Enjoyable Evening Out
My wife and I had a wonderful evening from the service to the food to the view. My wife loves salmon and when they told her they typically serve it more on the medium to I think medium rare side she went to well done which is more her speed and loved it. She had the teriyaki style. I had the Swordfish parmesan it could not have been better. Very rich but delicious. I travel a decent bit an...

  17. You're paying for the view!
Went there on a weekend night with a client. It was pretty bare so you thought we'd get good service and food. Boy, was I wrong! We all ordered lobster bisque and we all sent it back. It was strong tasting. One of the guys said his salmon was raw and sent it back. The waiter said that's the way they prepare salmon here. I call it bait! My fish was just so-so...nothing to write home about...

  18. Pittsburgh's finest attraction!
I took my girlfriend to Monterey Bay for the first time in December 07, We fell in love with this restaurant from the time we were shown to our table. We were seated at the widow overlooking the city, the food was so good its beyond description. The Swordfish and the blackened Mako shark has had me fantasizing about returning ever since. Service was great, the atmosphere even better. This pla...

  19. Fresh Fish, NIce View, That's About It
After the nice reviews here, and elsewhere, we decided to try Monterey Bay and see the view from Mt. Washington. The view was, indeed, very nice on a colder, clear January night. We came early, since the window views are "first-come, first-serve." Even at 5:06, the best tables were already taken, but we had a nice view of the sunset. Our waitress was good, although better service can definitely b...

  20. The view is beautiful... the food is blah
Obviously, this place has great reviews so we were in Pittsburgh and had to try it. Our experience was not at all what we thought it would be. The view is beautiful, for sure, and we had a window seat to enjoy it. That was fantastic. We had a appetizer on the specials menu which was wonderful... prawns stuffed with goat cheese and wrapped in bacon... amazing. We upgraded to the lobster salad...

  21. Great service and bread choices
This restaurant is now located by the Monroeville Mall. My wife and I decided to give it a try because we had heard from friends that it was a good experience and the food delicious. The food was good, not great and the service was excellent! We did not enjoy the atmosphere at all though. We were seated in a corner booth which was not private at all. We experienced high traffic all around us...

  22. Trust with important nights!
I took my fiancee here the night we were engaged. I didn't pop the question at the restaurant, but I easily could have! What a classy place and amazing wait staff! The views are excellent as well. However, the absolute best part of the MBFG is the amazing crab cakes...they are a MUST have!!! I highly reccomend! Oh, and free dessert to celebrate our special night! (Thanks MBFG!)

  25. Great Seafood & A Killer Dessert
Showing up on a Monday evening after 8 pm, who knew we would need a reservation, but thankfully another couple didn't show so we slipped into their spot. What a great view of the city, and even though the hostess was less than friendly, our server, Sherrie, was fantastic. She explained all the specials for the evening and even showed us some of them as she brought them out for other customers. ...

  26. amateurish, oversized portions, you pay for the view and that's all.
wow, what a disappointment. Went back to pittsburgh on a visit, and we went up to Monterey Bay to see how it was. The decor is kitschy at best-- with weird gigantic palm tree paintings adorning the fixtures leading to the lights, and dirty windows in the tiny waiting area. The server announced she was college student, and then went through the endless litany of specials. curiously, the menu's...

  27. Consistently excellent
I am a travel agent and tour guide and whenever I have guests in from out of town, we always begin at sunset with a drink in the bar. A killer view especially if there is a game and they have fireworks. The bar is also a great alternative for dinner if the window seats are all taken upstairs - the only caveat being Pittsburgh still allows smoking in their bars! In all the years I have gone her...

  28. Horrible experience!
I took my father here when he visited for the first time. Firstly, the waitress forgot our drinks, after we sat there for 15 minutes without any service. We were seated next to the kitchen, even though I made reservations 3 days prior. When our food was brought, it was served to us cold. They offered us a dessert for our troubles, but why would we subject ourselves to further disappointment?! Avo...

  29. Great Customer Service. Average Dishes.
The four of us had really high hopes for the Fish Grotto. Sadly, the best part of the meal was the service. Followed by the Mango Cosmopolitan. Each fillet of fish was hidden underneath a pile of various garnishes which easily overpowered the delicate flavors of the fish. We ordered the Black Cod Sale Fish, Grouper, and both versions listed under Boston Scrod. The Grouper was the worst as far as ...

  30. Best upscale seafood in Pittsburgh
Forget the national chains in town. If you want upscale seafood, head to MB Fish Grotto. The food is excellent and the view is classic 'Burgh. If you've got clients in town, this is the place to take them. My only issue with the place is the dated feel of the dining room decor. Hopefully, they'll remodel soon to an interior that suits the impeccable food and service found here on a nightly b...

  31. Wonderful food, service, and view!
On a recent trip to Pittsburgh, a group of 10 of us dined here. I cannot say enough good things. The food was fantastic, the service was wonderful, and the view was spectacular, there's not a bad seat in the place. The price was not bad either for this quality of restaurant. If I ever get back to Pitt, this will be my first dining spot.

  34. Another gem in Mt. Washington
This restaurant is five star, all the way. The dining area is at the top of a high rise building, and the night view of Pittsburgh alone from high atop Mt. Washington is worth the price of dinner. Dinners ARE fairly pricey here, but very delicious and elegantly served. My son took me here for Mother's Day one year, and he does not enjoy fish. 38. Superb dining
This is by far the best restaurant in Pittsburgh. Everything about Monterrey Bay is superb: food, service, ambience, view, romantic dining, etc. They even have an excellent martini menu. In my opinion, for the quality of food that is served, I think that the price is very reasonable; the portions are generous; side dishes and salad are included. Fantastic view, great fish and seafood! Their crabcakes are wonderful, probably the best I've ever had except for one other restaurant in Maryland. And I lived in New England for many years! 40. What a disappointment
I'd heard great things about this place and was thrilled when we were invited to dine there (not on our tab!). Bottom line, the food's nothing special. Okay they have a billion types of fish there, but if you don't prepare them in a way that tastes good, what good is it? There were 8 people in our group, 7 different dishes. 4 of us ended up picking at our food. 2 of the remaining 4 in our p...

During my numerous trips to this fantastic restaurant I have never been dissappointed. From the crab cakes to the wine list we are always happy to eat here. The great part with Monterey is if you are not a big fish & seafood eater there steaks are out of this world. Service has always been top notch. Please enjoy this resteraunt the way may family and freinds do.

The food was great, the view was great, and the service was excellent. I have to add that I went to this restaurant on the second day after I quit smoking, so I was PRETTY tense. However, the combination of the view, the food, and the pleasant service put me at ease and I left the restaurant in a less frazzled condition than when I walked in. I usually hate places like these....tourist traps cashing in on a view or a local landmark. Food is usually boring and bad, service is condescending, and prices are way too high. I went to Monterey..reluctantly. I was wrong, very wrong. Our lovely waitress was lovely and authentic...and good. RESERVATIONS! Dinner for just the two of us or with a large group of friends - it's the best at Monterey Bay. We always have had a great table (what could be bad when you're w/ whom you enjoy!) The shrimp appetizer melts in your mouth and both the Rodi salmon & crab cakes are addicting. The wines are sure to please every taste. 47. Stuffy--and not just the crab cakes.
The hostess was extremely rude, the ambience was incredibly stuffy, but surreally comical due to the obscenely inappropriate teal vests of the staff. The food was good, but nothing I haven't tasted elsewhere in the city. There are many better places to dine with both the view, cuisine, and courtesy that would be expected.

  49. Very Romantic, Great Food
Monterey Bay on Mount Washington is one of the most romantic restaurants in the city of Pittsburgh. As far as being romantic, the Mount Washington location is perched up on the top of a hill, and the restaurant is on the top floor of a high rise. The entire side of the restaurant is windows, and at dinner time, you'll definitely get one of the best views of Pittsburgh. As for food, every thing...

Not worth the effort. I made reservations and then arrived early to try and get a window seat - fat chance. The hostess was rude and gave me a pager (what? TGI Fridays?).
