  3. Yum Yum after the Theatre
After seeing a great play, we stopped in at a friends request... yummy and well priced. Waitress was friendly and helpful and the food was quite wonderful. Make a reservation if you're seeing a show on the weekends... it was more difficult getting in for brunch.

  8. ı love this place...
I love this place. I've been 3 times, and have never been disappointed by my food/wine selections. The staff are very professional, and make helpful recommendations. It's also extremely romantic inside and out, but unfortunately I've only been with girlfriends. If the boy took me here, I would TOTALLY make out with him after.

  9. Fabulous venue for a small party--wedding or otherwise.
I had a small wedding at the last minute in July 2007. After researching a few different places that could accomodate a small group of less than 30 people a week before the wedding, we stumbled upon Chez Josephine's. What a find!! We couldn't have asked for better food, atmosphere, or staff for our special day. We used the room upstairs and the live piano music was piped through which just added ...

  13. personality on 42nd street
This is a bustling place with an excellent pianist. The staff is incredibly nice, friendly, smiling, fun, and efficient.....not hard on the eyes either. Pissaladiere was a little different, but wonderful and the confit was very good too.

  14. The Reviews are Right!
I love this restaurant. It has character, passion, and a beautiful ambience. The seafood is delicious, as are more classic french dishes such as onion soup. My date loved the dessert "Chocolate heaven". The service is great, albeit a bit rushed when it's later in the evening, (we were there until midnight). The kitchen closes at 1 am, a huge plus in the theatre district for a post-dinner meal. Th...

  15. A Definite Favorite!
Chez Josephine is my absolute favorite restaurant in the city. It has never disappointed me. Jean Claude has always managed to find me a table on the few occasions my husband and I decided to drop in. It has been my restaurant choice for our anniversary celebration since I discovered it 5 years ago (we've been married for 6). The waitstaff is attentive and friendly, Jean Claude is treat and t...

  16. Not worth your money
I dined here with a friend in June and it was NOT worth the money. I decided to try Chez Josephine based on the great reviews I've read but it did not live up to the hype. I ordered the escargot & duck confit. The escargot was flavorless and was NOT fresh. The duck was insipid as well and tasted as if it had been microwaved. It was apparent this food had been prepared earlier in the day. In a nut...

  17. better than expected
When the person you're with leans across the table and tells you she really likes this place, you know you made a good choice and hope the rest of the meal turns out to be as good. It did. I had the filet au poivre, she had the duck. The tables are a little close together (which is ok because she can talk to me and listen to everyone else at the same time). The fellow to her right admired her ...

Looking for the "typical" American dining experience (order within 5 minutes, leave in less than 1/2 hour) - dont go there. Want a great dining experience like in France of Italy - yes, make a reservation!!! Food: well prepared, tasty, flavors fresh and appealing. Summer menu excellent value for money. 19. How Disapointing!
I'm so sad. I really wanted to like this place. The food was mediocre, at best. two of my guest ordered the fried chicken. I had the NY strip au poivre, and one guest had th risotto with strimp. We all had wine. My pinot noir was moldy tasting. The steak, although cooked properly came with an odd tasting au poivre sauce. The fried chicken was unexplicably boneless and overly breaded. Ther...

  22. Paris dans Nouveau York!
If you can't be in Paris, Chez Josephine is a perfect substitute. From the moment you walk in to the moment you leave, and you won't want to, everything about Josephine is magnifique. It is unforgettable in every way, from the attentive wait staff to the sinfully delicious food to charming Jean-Claude Baker himself. 23. Chez Josephine
My wife and I have been to Chez Josephie almost since it opened. Although not as frequently as we would like, each time we have been treated as a guest, not as a customer. Even just to stop for a drink and canape at the bar is a joy, and makes our trip to New York complete.

  24. A tribute to a legend ...
Chez Josephine is not only an amazing restaurant that everyone of all styles of life dine but a restaurant that pays tribute to the late Josephine Baker. The owner/adopted son of the Josephine (Jean-Claude) sits with you and talks with you as if you are an old friend. The romantic atmosphere of the decor is perfect with the piano player in the background singing songs of yesterdays past. The m...

I hosted a small birthday party at the restaurant a few weeks ago and it turned out fabulous! The food was excellent and the service was wonderful. We sat next to the piano and it wasn't too loud. The pianist even took requests! By the way, he was the composer and singer for the music on the show The Wedding Story. 28. Beware....
First of all, there should be three $'s on this one. We didn't have alcohol oror dessert and our meal was almost $100 with tip for the two of us. The food was wonderful (I had grilled mahi mahi, my husband had the crab cakes). My meal was done perfectly, but the mashed potatoes were a bit salty. The lobster bisque was to die for! We were seated next to the piano and was not at all too loud fo...

I went to Chez Josephine last summer and it was excellent. When we arrived we were immediately seated. We had an EXCELLENT server who was very knowledgable about the restaurant and the city. Our food was great. There was even a guy who came around to wipe crumbs from the table. The owner walked around and talked to guests. Overall it was great and I cant wait to go back again! 31. Catch a show and Chez Josephine
A great favorite right in the heart of the Theater District. Great food and live music. The kitchen is open until late. The staff is attentive and makes sure you get to your show on time. Try the layered apple, rhubarb crepe cake for desert. The Crème Brulee will make you think of 42nd street in a totally different way.

  33. Save Yorself a Trip
This restaurant left everything to be desired, especially the food. For the money they charge you including a 20% gratuity which they include in your bill (Valentines Day evening) and the mandatory deposit they make you leave in addition to the inflated bill, you are better off going to Le Cirque. The food at Le Cirque runs circles around this dingy little classless dive and at Le Cirque, they wi...

  35. Great food, but it's very expensive
This restaurant should not be rated $$. If you plan to have a nice 3-course dinner, expect to pay $100 or more for 2 people. The cheapest entree is $18 with the average price of 22-23. The cheapest salad is $8. Deserts are $7. Soup is $7.50. If money is not an issue for you, this place is very nice and romantic, the service is good, and the food is very tasty. My other disappointment was that ...

  36. Moulin Rouge Feel!
My date and I went before the show. And we are locals just as a quick disclaimer, I know this area is a touristy place. But we had a blast! There was a crooner and then a duet piano/singer and trumpet player looking right out of the Roaring 20's or some Paris Montramarte avant garde time. The food was great! Best was the chocolate Bread Pudding with a warm chocolate sauce - oh man an orgasm ...

We arrived at Chez Josephine after a visit to Broadway, and were not disappointed with the service nor the food! I understand that pre theatre can be a little hectic but as we arrived mush later we were seated promptly and had excellent service. Would recommend to friends most certainly. It's a very romantic restaurant but make sure you go on an empty stomach as the portions are large and rich!

  38. Fabulous does not do it justice
Fabulous does not do this restaurant justice but it is all I can think of. The only draw backs were that we were seated right next to the piano players and at times it was a little loud, and the lighting made it so that you had to use your candle to read the menu. The food was absolutly fantastic and the portions were more than I expected.(considering this is a "French Restaurant") J...

  39. Ruined Anniversary
25th Wedding Aniversary for my parents, and they treated us poorly, and then debated with us when THEY screwed up the order. Overall I was shocked that such a traditionally classy establishment would treat people this way on such a special night. I had never been before, and will never go again. If you're looking for upscale French cuisine I would suggest Le Cirque (of course), or better yet Dani...

  42. Very nice time, but crowded and loud.
The atmosphere and service are great...very cozy. But don't go during the pre-theatre rush -- it's a mob scene up until 8:00pm. We had a 7:30 res but had to wait 45 minutes to be seated. The food is very good though and the prices reasonable. The piano player and trumpet player are nice, but a bit loud for the small, cramped space. If you're sitting too close to the piano, you won't be able to he...

The friendly face of Ramon as he greeted us at the door along with the great service from Cesar , excellent food, romantic setting, and light piano music made this a definite worthwhile trip out into the cold on a Tuesday night. I cannot say enough good things about this place. I went here for my birthday and I have never had such a good experience at a restaurant. The service was like none other, the owner personally seated us and spent a few minutes talking with us. He also showed us to the door when we were ready to leave ( which is hard to do because you will want to linger forever). The live piano was lovely and rel...

Excellent, we went along after a visit to the theatre and we loved it! The food was excellent and the staff polite and helpful! Although the food was quick we were not rushed and made very welcome by all the staff. We visited after the theatre, so it was a little quieter than we thought, which was lovely and we enjoyed the benefits of the unhasseled staff! a def must visit!

Live nearby. Love the fabulous owner, who greets and seats. It's always an excellent flabouyant and classy place to take friends and newcomers to the city and to return to...truly unique. The food doesn't change much, and I can't seem to shake the need for some more outrageous and even more flavorful dishes.

If you like low lit restaurants and wonderful food thats hot, this is a great choice. With the peaceful sound of a live pianist and a variety of appetizers, entrees, desserts, and of course, many expensive wines, you will think your in Paris, France.
