Authentic Spanish Food When I was still a teenager, many years ago, this was the first place I tasted Spanish food. Now, after living in Spain for a few years, I can still return to El Faro and enjoy their authentic Spanish Food. This is NOT a Mexican restaurant, but one with food of Spain, a totally different business....I love good Spanish food. Any of their garlicky prepared presentations will happily remain deli... Best paella anywhere.
My first meal at El Faro was in 1969. Nothing but a few of the waiters have changed since. The bar is still terriffic, shrimp in garlic sauce with great bread and a pitcher of margarita will get you going. Still the best paella in North America let alone New York City. Standard meal for 38 years. Paella Valenciana (not with lobster) , lobster in white sauce, and if you have room, pork in a... Read More On Citysearchgreatfavad 10/12/2007
Always a good experience here I've been coming here for years and have yet to be disappointed. Great for couples or large groups. Their sangria rocks and the food is great. Don't expect great atmosphere though! Read More On Citysearchburgerbiatch 11/5/2006
Great seafood, good sangria value Stumbled on this restaurant. The menu didn't strike me as anything too special at first, but our very nice waiter assured us that anything we picked would be terrific since it's lasted on the menu for so long. The shrimp in wine sauce was amazing, large shrimp and great creamy sauce. We had one of the veal dishes, pretty good. We ordered the half-carafe of sangria, which was only $12 but fill... Best Paella in NYC I have eaten at El Faro for the last 5 years and never had a bad meal. This is a small bustling mom & pop operation that combines great food with adequate service and friendliness. Everyone greets me when I arrive and they even know my name. I am treated like a human being and not herded like cattle. Yes it is small and noisy but that is fridays & weekends. You want a quiet romantic dinner try a ... Read More On Citysearchstregamama 8/30/2006
Systematically Pushes out Diners We heard that El Faro serves some of the best Spanish dishes in the city and we decided to give it a try. My wife and I were seated promptly. Our orders were taken and served accordingly. The house bread and salad were average, the sangria was very good and the paella is excellent. However, the dining area is small and can get quite noisy. The décor is not that great either and needs som... Read More On Citysearchkibitz 6/10/2006
A Spanish Gem I first stumbled upon this great Spanish restaurant with a friend a few years ago, while roaming the meatpacking district. It doesn't loook like much from the outside, but once you step inside the cozy and romantic atmosphere lends to such an authentic Spanish feel, reminicent of tapas bars I frequented while traveling through Spain. There's a beautiful mural on the walls of the dining room- no... Read More On Citysearchmiacomp 5/16/2006
Good Food, Lousy Everything Else The place is really crowded and noisy and the staff's emphasis seems to be on turning over the tables. The service was subpar with the waiters acting either indifferent, brusque or downright rude. If you can overlook that, the sangria is good and the food (save for the garlic bread, which seemed a bit charred) was excellent. We enjoyed a range of dishes, including shrimp, beef and paella. If you ... Read More On Citysearchshanir 1/16/2006
Craving for Paellas! My boyfriend took me to El Faro for our Valentine's Day dinner. Knowing the fact that I love sangria and spanish food, this place was pretty incredible. Because the restaurant is so old and small, it gave it a sense of authencity and underground-like feel; like you're actually in Spain. The eating area was pretty small but cozy. My boyfriend ordered the classic paella and I had a broiled sirloin ... Read More On Citysearchsugarchula 2/16/2005

perfecto El faro was awesome. i went with my boyfriend, who lives in Spain, and my parents, who had gone to El faro before and raved about it. i knew it was going to be a good time when we were waiting for a table and my boyfriend noticed that the El faro 'logo' was actually the city crest of La Coruna, the city where my boyfriend is from. El faro means the lighthouse, just in case you were curious..refe... Read More On Citysearchemily526 8/4/2004

The Best of the Best I've been visiting El Faro Rest. for the last 20 yrs. and let me tell you what a wonderful place is. If you want to know what a Paella, sangria, margarita is, you must visit this tiny but delicious and full of taste restaurant. Waiters, bartenders and every single person that works in this restaurant know what the customers like and always are there to make you feel good. No wonder this place ... Best sangria, worst food This quaint old place feels like the 70+ year old family business it is billed as, but unfortunately resting on their laurels is something they have obviously become accustomed to. After sitting at the bar for half an hour waiting for a table (which I don't mind too much for a small place that does not take reservations), drinking some of the best sangria I have had in the City, we were seated. T... Read More On Citysearchalanmcseveney 6/6/2004
A Bit Disappointing Went with high expectations. Loved the ambience. Food was delicious, but would have been much better if the shrimp and lobster had not been overcooked. Loved the garlicky sauces! Sangria delicious. Read More On Citysearchjcbweinberg 2/8/2004
Best Portuguese Food in NY Try and find a better paella or mariscada dish in NY. Be warned though - they like to use lots of garlic. Cosy old fashioned atmosphere and huge portions make it hard to beat. Their salad dressing (which they also sell for only $2 a bottle!) is unique. Read More On Citysearchciarar 7/23/2003
