  2. The food was good BUT.....
The food was very, very good but you couldn't hear the person talking right across the table from you. Everyone in our party complained about the same thing. They need to do something to reduce the decible level otherwise, as good as the food was, many of us wouldn;t think of going back. My ears are still ringing.

  3. Outstanding Italian
Giovanni's is a Detroit institution. And, in a neat switch, they manage to hold to their own high standards. Through fires, economic downturns, and suburban flight, Giovanni's has continued to turn out consistently high-quality Italian food. The food is great, the atmosphere is wonderful, and the owner's commitment is evident. Go. Eat. Enjoy. Oh--and try the spinach gnocchi. It's the be...

Diverse menu, well-prepared food, superb ambience, excellent service, secure parking, and a personal touch from the owner and her family. For seven years, our favorite place for romantic dining.

Order an entree but you MUST order a pasta too. It practically melts in your mouth. You'll find out what you've been missing at other italian restaurants.

  6. Romance x 5
this is a great little family restaurant that is hidden away in an industrial area of town. very limited tables but this is excellent for quiet discussions with your tablemates. The ambiance is great and the staff are properly trained to service customer but leave enough alone for private conversation. the food is excellent and well proportioned, you will not go home hungry. The wine list is e...

I always take people that visit me to Giovanni's & they ALWAYS love it! The atmosphere is lovely. The restaurant is well decorated & inviting. They have an incredible array of pasta dishes & pizzas. I consistently get the Fettucini Roma, the mushrooms are to die for! Anything I've ever eaten there is delicious. Definitely a must-try if you're in the area & looking for a great meal for your money!

  8. Great Food - Great Night
The food was fantastic, I had the Prociuto Pizza which was amazing, my friend had the Pecorino pizza, which was also great. Both were wonderful, great thin crusts, bursting with flavors from the fresh and abundant ingredients. The salads are simply dressed with lemon juice, olive oil, sea salt and pepper- but for once, you can actually taste the quality ingredients, not just the salad dressing. T...

  9. I love this place! Mangia! Mangia!
This is perfect home cooking italian. The place is always packed which is a sure sign that it is well liked. The bolognese and the lasagna are the best I've ever had. You can tell they use the best ingredients because even the simplest things are delicious! The pasta is an unbeatable deal and if you are with a large group - the portions are generous. There is also a under $25 wine list with a wid...

All the pasta and salad options are excellent portions and a nice variety. Not the same old stuff. Freshest mozzarella I have had but beware the tiramisu is deadly for anyone on a diet!!! Bellisimo

  11. OH MY GOD!!!!!!
When I think of the very very very best restaurant in Michigan, inevitably, I think of Giovanni's. Everything, from the service to the bread to the salads are to die for. I get a Chicken dish with a creamy rosemary mushroom sauce that is so good my mouth waters just thinking about it. And their pasta (homemade and soooo tender) is like nothing else I have every had. If you like Italian, you w...

This used to be a great spot. It has become very overpriced and overrated, and it has lost the customers that built its reputation.

  15. A little bit of Italy
My wife and I dine there quite often. The food is exceptional and the atmoshpere is awesome. The owners go out of their way to ensure that every guest's experience is something to remember. My wife even had her wedding shower in the wine room, and said it was the absolute most memorable experience. The food, the enviroment and the staff make this our favorite place to dine.

  16. A Diamond in the Rough
The little gem in Southwest Detroit, that sits on Oakwood, illuminates ambiance and character. The owner Francias Truant creates a warm and inviting atmoshpere for each and every individual that crosses through her door. The exsquisite taste and presentation of the food will keep customers coming back for more.

  17. Giovanni's
My husband and I stumbled upon this restaurant 5 years ago when we were first dating and we have been going back ever since. It is has a romantic atmosphere with fabulous italian food and this is coming from one who was raised with italian cooking. To topped it all off, the service has always been at it's best. We have brought our best of friends there to enjoy.

  18. Best Italian in Detroit
Giovanni's is simply the best Italian in the city. We had heard many things about this place but had never been there. It is definately a destination .... the neighborhood is lacking but the food is worth the trip and more. The pasta was outstanding and the service made you feel at home. In fact, the owner stopped by several times to tell us about the food and the history. I have always thou...

  19. Great Place for a first class meal
This is one of the great Italian resturants. It is located in an industrial area, and does not look like much from the outside. Inside, it is incredible. It has the atmosphere that makes you think Joe Pescei and Ray Liotta are in the back room "You think I'm funny?" It is definitly the place to go for that upscale evening. On the down side, the prices are on the high side. I can...

  21. Good Pasta
Food was good but not quite up to expectations. I had heard a lot about this place but found it just O.K. The pasta was pretty good. More expensive than I expected. Our service was not great, but adequate. Don't go wandering around outside here as the neighborhood is not inviting.

  25. Nice, but not notable!
We had heard a lot about this place, but we had apparently built it up too much and were disappointed over all. The fare was OK, service was good. Price was a little high for both quallity and quantity. We there for Valentines Day. The whole dining experience was acceptable, but not exceptional in any way

  27. Good but overpriced
With all due respect and coming from a hardcore Sicilian, this restaurant has very good food done in a wonderfully delicate blend of spices and perfectly prepared pasta but it's just too high priced. I can not justify the cost with the quality. Sorry.

We had a good time here but the food was not exceptional. The service was pretty good, but a little over friendly. A good looking place on the inside but don't go wandering around outside. A little expensive for what it is.

  29. stop by the ATM before you get there!
My wife and I went to Giovanni's to celebrate our anniversary of 12 years. We had heard very good things about it and decided to give it a try. The food and service were wonderful, but the prices were very steep. I would rather go to Papa Vino's in Northville 3 times than go to Giovanni's once for the same food and service value. If you do go, the veal medallions with a side of linguine is aw...

  30. The ghost of old blue eyes
The story persists that this was the stomping grounds of Frank and his entourage while passing through D-town. This simple fact plus old style elegance and excellent food places Giovanni's in the upper echelon of Detroit restuarants. If your date isn't impressed, find a new date.

  31. Yum yum!
The atmosphere was very romantic and the food was awesome - best Italian I've ever had!! The owner of the resaurant came out and chatted with each of the guests. We were kinda in a hurry and that made things a bit difficult (waitress was annoyed). It probably would've taken 2 hours to go thru all of the courses, but we kinda rushed through in 1 and a half. Will definitely go back!
