Favorite restaurant in town I moved to Austin from the Bay Area last year with my girlfriend and spent the first 6 months or so looking for the best Sushi restaurant we could find. After going to Tomo for the first time our search was over. Hard as it was for us to admit, it probably surpasses our favorite sushi place from the Bay Area. Inmates running the asylum All of the rolls tasted the same to me, and they were prepared by a staff of clowns, led by an obnoxious sushi chef suffering from one of the worst cases of Napoleon complex I've had to endure. He was boastiing about his prowess with the ladies, taking multiple shots of beer or sake, and had the knfe skills of a uncoordinated lefthanded toddler using righthanded safety scissors Some of my nigir... Wonderful experience; always back for more! Tomo is a place I come back to for sushi every time I'm in town. My folks introduced me to the place when I was in high school. I've since graduated and moved to Missouri for college, but EVERY time I'm back in town, I make sure to stop at Tomo.
The chefs and staff are personable, the restaurant is tastefully posh, without being pretentious.

best sushi in austin Reviewers calling Tomo average or bad sushi either got very unlucky on their visit or do not know sushi. This is the best sushi in town because the fish and vegetables are good quality and extremely fresh, the rolls are well planned in terms of balance in taste and texture, and the nori is superbly prepared. I'm talking your teeth slice right through, never chewy.

3 Thumbs down! Why does someone decide to open a sushi bar? I mean, seriously. The greatest majority of restaurants fail in their first few years.
In Tomo Sushi we have an example of one of those unique non-failures that has been played up by the drunken in-crowd that hasn't the first clue what exquisite sushi is all about.
Why would you pay for:

The best sushi experience in Austin... There are few things that I like more than good sushi. I consider myself to be a sushi snob. I've eaten sushi all over the US including places like San Fransisco, LA, Sand Diego and New York. Tomo's humble setting is at first glance, unimpressive. What you discover after eating there is that there is no place on earth quite like Tomo.

My favorite sushi restaurant! My husband and I consider ourselves sushi connoisseurs. We have been to almost every sushi restaurant in town and frequently try various sushi restaurants when we travel. Tomo is my favorite! Rude staff and made me ill Ate lunch at the sushi bar here yesterday and was talked into trying a fresh squid roll rather than my selection, which turned out to be more expensive though I was led to believe the opposite would be true. Fine, my fault. I'm usually willing to listen to the suggestion of the staff assuming they know the menu and the risk I take is they're trying to upsell so I knew that.

Been chasing great sushi for 35 years....found it at Tomo! Friends took me to Tomo Saturday night, liked the atmosphere....great vibe. The food was absolutely wonderful. I have to tell you that I loved, loved, loved the sushi chef's involvment with our dining experience. Great fish - drunk chefs I was taken here several months ago by a friend that wanted to try it for his birthday. We had a great time and the food was awesome. Best sushi in Austin, but... It's true, the sushi here is debatably the best in Austin. The menu rolls are imaginative, and the selection of fresh items is outstanding. I've been many times, and the food has always been great.

Mediocre and 'safe' Menu Went there yesterday since it is located closed to where I live. The servers were kind enough to let us in even though it was after lunch hour (they close after lunch hour and reopen again for dinner in the evening).
