Excellent option for everyone. A little out of the way but well worth it. Love the tuna options. Great edamame and wasabi and sushi and cucumbers and everything.
the sushi here is probably one of the best in SF for this price. Great atmosphere but it's in a very small place. Definitely worth checking out!
Not sure what the buzz is about. I am a food professional and eat in amazing sushi spots across the US and beyond (Tsukiji market is fish heaven) Sushi Bistro is comfortable and likeable but the fish was not. HUGE portions of poor quality sashimi is not what good sushi should be. The tuna was dyed. The rolls on the menu read well but the execution was not there...soggy and not balanced. Too bad ...
Lots of energy, always busy, always fast. It's a great mix of local people and is a popular scene with the USF crowd. We get take out every week or two and are always pleased with the quality. They have a lot of unique rolls that are worth trying.
This is my favorite sushi place in SF. It can be hard to get a table some nights, but it is always worth it. My favorite is the Spicy Girl Tuna appetizer made with white tuna and macadamia sauce. The "spring" lettuce wrap is another fav. The fish has always been super fresh and perfectly prepared in my experience.
I do not agree with the good reviews here. We went there based on very good reviews here and on some other sites. We ordered 10 Nigiris each (combo), and one time 6 nigiries and 8 Californian rolls to be shared.
The rolls were good, wherever they were not like any other Californian Rolls we've eaten anywhere else. No nori. They were made of rice and sesame, with crab in the middle.
The Nig...
Went to San Francisco for vacation in February 2008. My husband and I did our research to find a great sushi place, and decided on Sushi Bistro. We loved it so much that we went back two nights later, when we had all of San Francisco's fine eatieries to choose from! We dreamt of "Hot Love" after our first experience, an appetizer that is a MUST TRY! We have eaten sushi in AZ, other parts of C...
Their sashimi is so far the best on my list. It is fresh that requires not biting... it melts inisde your mouth, and thats what I called "real" japanese sushi/ sashimi. Prompt seating? They tried... but its a little unfair... they give the best seats to the Caucasians... if you are one, then congradulations. The Sushi chef was amazing... sitting in front of the sushi bar can make conversation with...
On 09.15.07 Saturday evening we walked in and were told it will be 45 minutes. After 40 minutes walked in to check again, we were told that he was sitting reservations first and did not know how long it would be. My wife and I had our cousin and 7 year old nephew out of town who's nuts about sushi. We were looking forward to this meal all day and had bitter sushi at the end.
Next time I would ...
I LOVE this place! The fish is consistently fresh and delicious. Picking the next roll to order is always difficult, as all choices are great, but the Spicy Crunchy is my No. 1. Can you say Macadamia nut crust!!! I thought you could! I appreciate that this is not your typical sushi joint, after all it's got "bistro" in its name for pete's sake and reggae on its soundsystem. But I like that ...
The sushi is ok, but I felt like i missed something. The parking situation was horrible. If you think sushi is about rolls than go to this place otherwise find someplace else.
This is my favorite sushi joint in the city! The spicy tuna is like butter and i highly recommend the watermelon man roll. Bring all your friends and make a reservation! Enjoy!
My first visit was when the restaurant first opened. Since there was such buzz among my sushi loving friends, I went back. Both visits were disappointing. Kudos to the menu writer as the descriptions sound amazing however the execution is poor. We ordered a yellow tail & sea bass special roll from the daily menu - to our disappointment - the fish was cooked! No where was it indicated nor men...
Been to this place a couple of times, but my most recent experience is what prompted me to compose this review.
I went to Sushi Bistro with a group of 22 for my birthday (there are probably only 30 seats in the entire restaurant). From start to finish, the entire experience went flawlessly. My Girlfriend called for the reservation and was given no guff about the number of guests. The two of us...
I've been coming here since I moved to the city, around 2 years ago. The food is always top notch and they keep the menu interesting. Sashimi fans will not be disappointed - the portions of fish are huge and they are the freshest I've ever had. I recommend the Tuna, Albacore, Yellowtail, and Aji.
The rolls are creative and flavorful. I recommend the Watermelon Man, 49er Roll, C-2, Yellow...
Hip and Trendy Sushi restaurant. Amazing food, great music, and good saki selection. Great place to eat sushi and drink saki with friends. Fun and lively atmosphere, 10+++.
I live in Orange County, Ca and was in San Francisco visiting family. I eat sushi about three times a week at home. While in San Francisco we stopped by Sushi Bistro. This was by far the best and most creative sushi restaurant I have ever eaten at. From the sashimi to the elaborate specialty rolls, everything melts in your mouth. The sushi and service was so good we ate there the next night as we...
I found Sushi Bistro on Citysearch when looking for a place to take my sister on her birthday. I must say the most disappointing aspect was finding a parking place; then again, I would do it all over again to dine at Sushi Bistro. I found it hard to believe there were open tables.
The flavor combinations were delightful and the presentation was lovely. The staff made us feel at home and were qu...
Terrific, fresh sushi. Not the most exciting place visually, but the sushi rocked. So did the lettuce wraps and the few rolls we had. I would definitely go back.
This little place is the best in the city. Top two reasons: Really fresh fish and friendly chef and staff. They have a menu full of unique appetizers and rolls (Omega 3!), as well as the more traditional stuff. Like any good sushi place, it's not cheap but, large nigiri portions make it a pretty good value. Sushi Bistro also has a great premium sake list and Kirin on tap. Regulars at many o...
The sushi rolls are great, many new flavors and pairings. The Hawaiian and Aloha 101 are excellent, as well as the daily/weekly specials. It is just as pricey as most sushi restaurants so no bargains here but at least the food is worth the cost. The service is generally good with one or two nights exception recently when sitting at a table. The sushi bar service is always great!
When visiting ...
What more could you ask for! The fish is super fresh, the rolls are amazing and inventive, the service is extremely attentive and friendly -- AND they play 80's and reggae all night long too -- great vibes great sushi.
Now a regular spot for us. The sushi is super-fresh, the rolls and appetizers are unique and are not only beautifully presented, but are delicious. The staff is very friendly and always attentive. Very resonably priced. A MUST for any sushi-fanatic.
Wow
This place is great. Where have you been all my life. Their rolls are one of a kind and their fish is of the highest quality.
I frequent sushi restaurants often. Sushi Bistro definetly is by far my favorite in California. I am a southern cal resident but I travel to SF once or twice a month. I have to make sure to eat at Sushi Bistro everytime I go. My favorite things to order is the cajun albacore, lettuce wraps, and the miso glazed sea bass. My clients and I always have a great time!
The Rolls are Ridiculous. Sushi no bushi!
Try the Watermelon Man. It's good stuff.
I definitely recommend Sushi Bistro.
Traveling throughout all my life, I have had a LOT of sushi. From the trendy New York bistros to the humble stands in Japan, Ive had it all. But I never knew what sushi was until I ate at sushi bistro. sf. Rolls like Watermelonman and African Spider are true winners--literally. I remember speaking to the sushi master, Sheen. Not only was he friendly but he makes a mean Caucasian Afro. These names...
Sushi Bistro is the freshest tasting sushi in the city and the chef's special rolls are some of the most creative I've seen (and tasted). The food is meticulously prepared by the lone shushi chef, whoever he is. Despite the crappy parking and the seriously slow service, it's still my absolute favorite and I will continue to patron SB.
We went at 7:30pm and despite the place being full were seated in 10 mins. The Baby Lobster roll was very good. The 8 piece nigiri sushi were excellent. My friend even had the Asahi Kuronoma(Black) beer that is hard to find. The bill came to $51 with 2 beers, very reasonable for good sushi and good drinks. I really liked this place and would recommend it highly.
Go to shushi all the time and this is as good as it gets. That simple.
My expectations from this place was high, but was terribly disappointed by the abyssmal service we received. We were planning to head out once we got a rude attitude before we got seated, but we decided to stay to see if the food could make up for the rude service. We ordered a varied selection from the menu including specialty rolls, sashimi, and the sashimi salad. Though the food was fair, t...
I came for the first time since I saw some pretty good reviews of it. This place was so busy, I should have made reservations (even at 9pm on a thursday night). I was amazed at the number of rolls they had. The chef recommended the rolls, and they were so delicious. We also ordred the nigiri, the portions were huge. Food was great, and the staff was friendly. Parking was a little tough, but then ...
Man, I haven't been this disappointed in a while. I guess because prior to my visit, Sushi Bistro was rated #1 sushi joint by BoC. What a letdown.
We ordered agedashi tofu, mango salad of some sort, chicken teriyaki with steamed vegetables. The agedashi tofu was pretty good, very lightly crusted. The salad was very interesting and had a very refreshing flavor. The chicken teriyaki was h...
I moved to the city in December and have been compulsively sampling sushi restaurants in every neighborhood to find "The One." Sushi Bistro had some of the freshest fish I have ever had, and their roll selection was a wonderful combination of old favorites (Spider, Dragon, Rainbow) with unique and tasty creations (must try the lobster rolls!) The service is great and the price is right. It's n...
I've lived in San Francisco all my life, and have been going to sushi restaurants all over town - west portal, sunset, marina, Richmond, etc. I've never enjoyed sushi more than at Sushi Bistro. The fish is fantastic, the service is great, and it's the only place that I have been to that has the correct balance of price vs. quality of food/service.
The fish is always fresh and the orders that ...
Great, creative rolls! A lot of yummy, lobster combinations. Definitely going back!
Fake crab meat....
One more, they use the Chinese soy sauce.
Most of the rolls have the same ingredients, but made differently and they're are very tasty. Service was good, but the only thing I didn't like was that the rolls came out one by one. We ordered 4 rolls. There was the three of us so we would get one roll, then wait then another came out. I was still hungry so we ordered chicken teriyaki to feel full, but the chicken is very dry. Next time I go t...
I am a "Chowhound". One who loves to eat and would not mind driving out of the way to satisfy an appetite. In my case, all the way from the OC. I highly recommend "The Chowhound guide to San Francisco" for all food lovers. Every 6 month, I have to meet my sushi need and I do not mind driving all the way there even Sushi Bistro is almost 500 miles away.
Most restaurants have pretty much the sa...
My brother and I were in town from So. Cal and wanted sushi. We went on citysearch and decided on Sushi Bistro. While not in a very exciting part of town (north of GG Park, near UCSF) the sushi was pretty good! I ventured to try some sashimi and got gigantic servings of albacore--some of the most generous portions of fish I've ever seen. The quality was pretty good and the staff was friendly. I'd...
This is the kind of place you expect in San Francisco - quality, smaller place, excellent fish, neighborhood feeling. I've been at least 10 times now and have never gotten tired of the place. Even though I really do not care for tempura with my sushi, the tempura at this restaurant is excellent as well.
Fish isn't fresh???...Slow Service???...What?!?!
I dont think these disparaging reviewers are eating at the same Sushi Bistro I visit weekly. Its like they come once; bash the place, then leave. Take it from a regularSushi Bistros fish is so fresh it might swim away! Check the specials board for things like Big-Eye Tuna and Wild Alaskan Salmon. The chef uses the regular fish to create unbeliev...
I consider myself pretty picky when it comes to restaurants, so I was pleasantly surprised by how fresh and delicious everything was, and the decor was darling. Thank you City Search, for picking another winner!!
been to this restaurant several times, food was great, very creative rolls, great presentation, really different from these traditional nigiris... and, fish's always fresh, melts in your mouth... besides these great rolls on the menu, don't forget to check out their specials on the blackborad... had a great time there... definitely gonna come back..^^
Finally, I have found a decent restaurant that is friendly to kids! I have two under the age of 5. and while I was the only one there that had kids, the owners made me feel completely welcome and were very helpful (even making my oldest a set of "kiddly" chopsticks!). The sushi was delicious, as were the noodles. If you have kids but also love delicious good, I would go here.
I highly recommend Sushi Bistro. I live out in Contra Costa County and have been to all the sushi places out this way and none of them compare to Sushi Bistro. The Sushi Chef there is amazing and very personable. The fish is very fresh and the rolls that they have created there are one of a kind and very tasty! Everything that I have had there (appetizers, sushi rolls, udon, entrees) is delici...
I enjoyed my first visit to Sushi Bistro. I enjoyed the entire meal and was impressed by the efficient service our party received. I look forward to another visit and trying more of the delicious food.
After trying to get into another sushi place and waiting for 30 minutes, we decided to go into Sushi Bistro. Boy, were we glad that we did! Not only did we get seated right away, the sushi and cooked items were out of this world! I am now a loyal customer thanks to the delicious food and great service!
Based on the ratings this place got. I decided to check it out, and I was NOT disappointed! Not only did I love everything I ordered, the owners made sure I was happy by coming to check on me, even when the restaurant got busy. You have to go to this place to experience it for yourself!
I came here for a birthday party, and given the large group, there were a lot of room for problems, but it went smoothly without a hitch! I am very grateful to the owners for their helpfulness. Thank you again for a great night!
This new fusion style of sushi is great. They have a mix of Italian, Japanese, Hawaiian, Chinese, and Californian flavors in the sushi. The flavors in the sushi is so good that I didn't even need to use soy sauce. The fish there is also very fresh, (firm and flavorful) compared to other places where the fish is soggy and flavorless. I highly suggest sitting at the bar because the sushi chef there...
We visited Sushi Bistro and were amazed by the menu- tons of funky rolls, good specials menu, good saki menu, on top of the ordinary sushi fair and other food items (non-sushi). This place epitomizes California/Hawaiian Sushi. They even have a good variety of veggie and non-raw fish items. The place is a small restaraunt run by a small staff which gives you a very warm feeling. I personaly en...
If you are a sushi lover, this is the place for you! My date and I sat at the sushi bar for 2 hours enjoying the creations that the sushi chef prepared for us, some of which I've never had before! Great place, I'm defintiely going back!
I have eaten sushi all over this city and every time I do I find myself comparing it to Sushi Bistro. My boyfriend and I have been going there for over a year now and have tried many things on the menu as well as some new creations. We always tell the chef, Xin to make us something new and he delivers every time. The fish is always fresh, the salmon melts in your mouth. I especially like the ...
I have only been to Sushi Bistro a few times, but I absolutely LOVED this place! The dishes were extremely interesting, and all were delicious. I highly recommend this place for a one of a kind experience!
After our first taste of Sushi Bistro, we had to go back for more. We just can't get enough! The list of specialty rolls seem to go on forever, its amazing that chef Xin can remember them all. Check the wall for "specials of the day", which really are specials with freshness written all over them.
Also, where else can you get japanese beer on tap? Most sushi restaurants only offer the bottles wh...
The rolls are just so good here, there is no need for soy sauce at all. The place is a little small and cozy, but the food is great. The chef is also very energetic. He mingles with everybody that sits at the bar, I like that. Parking is a bit tough, but its definitely worth it.
I, too, was lured to visit sushi bistro based on the remarkable reviews it was getting only to be extremely disappointed.
SERVICE: extremely slow. it took forever just to get my glass of water refilled!
FISH: just average. there are so many better places to get fresher fish in the city.
FOOD OVERALL: some of the baked items were interesting...however pricey and given in small portions. o...
Not only were all the rave about this place right, but no one told me that the sushi chef, (I think his name is shin?) is also a good entertainer too. We sat at the bar where we could see him cut up the fish. Throughout the night he was talking to us and keeping us entertained. He also has a good sense of humor, and friendly too. Oh, by the way, the sushi was excellent. Price was was a little abo...
Go straight for the rolls because they are unbelievable. I tried out the mango ones that everyone recommended and it was excellent. The cool and refreshing flavorings were just amazing. This place rocks!!!!!
i just started coming here about 2 months ago, and everytime i come here, they just amaze me. the flavors that are in these rolls are just so good. i don't know what it is but i can't help stuff myself everytime. my favorite roll has to be the crouching tiger hidden dragon roll. i'm determined to try every single roll that is on the menu, it is just too good.
Sushi Bistro is currently ranked #1 for Best Of Sushi on Citysearch for 2005 so we went to check it out. There are SO many good rolls to choose from! The nigiri sushi was fresh also. I even liked the rolls that had mango in them. It sounds strange but it works! Definitely going to go back and try some of the other rolls.
Apparently they're the 2005 citysearch winners for best sushi. I went with my boyfriend to try it out. At first we didn't expect this place to be small, but its nice and cozy. After we the dishes came out, we were really surprised with the presentation. They were right, the rolls were were very delicious. It was a pleasant surprised, and we're definitely coming back.
How is this place is rated so high???? There are much better places that get lower ratings than this place. I don't understand the reviews here that say it's the best sushi and I really think they have ever eaten good sushi. I don't think you can call this kind of food sushi....
Honestly the only good thing here were the hot appetizers. But they came in tiny quantities and cost like around $1...
This place was a nice surprise. The sushi is very fresh and the pieces are pretty large. We weren't headed for here, but went in when another restaurant left us sitting there for 15 minutes without as much as a hello, so we went here. Have been back a few times. Very gracious service. And as for the rolls, everybody is right, they are delicious.
The Nigiri is excellent, with the fish being very fresh. So many different rolls to choose from, but from what I had, it was fantastic. Nice intimate place, and the sushi chef there was very friendly. I am definitely going back there again.
Ever since the first bite, I knew I would keep coming back. The consistently high quality of fish and creativity in their beautiful and often unexpected dishes makes dining here special. This kind of discovery makes me happy I live in San Francisco. The nigiri sushi is always extremely fresh and melts in your mouth just like you would expect from sushi at its highest level. The menu is filled...
I love this non-pretentious inner richmond super sushi joint. The menu is extremely creative, the food is very fresh and the service is friendly.
It's where I find Hot Love, Afican Spiders and a perfect Waikiki roll. I would recommend anthing from the "chef special rolls" list or the lettuce wraps.
The Bistro has a casual admosphere, not staged but real & real good!
Best Toro in town.
Sushi Bistro's Toro (fatty tuna) is so fresh, it melt in my mouth.
When you think sushi rolls, many people think, california rolls, caterpillar rolls, spider rolls...Well you can forget that at Sushi Bistro. More than 25 rolls, thats right, 25!!! You can see for youself on the their website, they've got descriptions of their rolls. I've only tried 3 of them, and it was fantastic. My favorite would be the New Legend - Shrimp tempura, spicey aioli, avacado topped wi...
Well besides having a very cordial and helpful staff, the sushi at "The Bistro" which I like to refer to it as is unparralleled. Usually when I go to a sushi place, I find myself ordering typical rolls such as crunchy or caterpillar rolls. At Sushi Bistro, I am able to satisfy my taste buds with delicious creations such as the 7 Flavor Albacore (my personal favorite), Lover Boat (for you lobste...
The yellowtail was like butter!!! melted in my mouth. Great place to go to get great sushi with a twist. Mango additions etc.. Not much for atmosphere but will definitely go back for the food. Our waitress was a sweetheart with a nice warm smile which made the experience that much better. Great place to check out for a quick weekday dinner.
The food is good and the fish is fresh. There are better sushi spots in SF with better ambiances. However the staff is friendly and the wait is non-existent. Their special rolls are very tasty but again, not as creative as other locations. Good meal at an alright price.
I spent some time in Southern California where the owner of Sushi Bistro was a Sushi Chef at my favorite sushi spot. I missed his "works of art" so much, until now, at last he has brought his talent to San Francisco.
I can remember the day Ebisu ruled the city. Over the last 15 years, I'd try other places but end up back there. This time, sadly, I have left my old favorite for good and settled into SB to satisfy my 3 times-a-week sushi habit. Unlike some other places in sf that focus on "atmosphere", quantity, or "creativity", the chef at SB turn obscenely fresh, translucent piles of fish into functional (and...
We had a party of three and arrived around 7:45PM on a Saturday. We were seated very quickly but it took a while to see the menu. The table was a bit sticky and we have to wipe down where we were sitting with our napkins. Atmosphere is a bit dark, could use a little more lighting.
We ordered the Sea Bass dinner and assorted sushi. It was a pretty unusual amount of time, somewhere over 30 m...
Please note- I only eat salmon- Be it a roll, sushi, or hand roll, thats all Ill eat. This guy knows his fish. Ive searched for better fish, and Im just not finding it. I dont know how he gets it so fresh. I hate fishing and Im glad that I have a place to go where I can get my fish like it was just pulled it out of the ocean.
Our oceans are being depleted of salmon at an alarming rate and ...
I wrote about Sushi Bistro over a year ago, so I thought it'd be good to update it. Since then Sushi Bistro has gone on to win Best of Citysearch and best of Yahoo for Sushi in San Francisco, so I guess the cat's out of the bag, it's been hard to get a seat at Xin's place ever since. We live a few blocks away and always enjoy going when we crave the freshest fish, tastiest rolls, and a good atm...
Went here after reading other citysearch reviews. I agree with everyone else. This place serve sushi with a twist. It's a small restaurant that feels cozy and friendly. The presentation is dramatic and there are unique items I've never seem anywhere else. It's a mix of California, Japan and France. Small plates with unique ingredients presented on a canvas platter. We dined on a weeknight ...
This place is really amazing. Xin is one of the most creative chefs that I have ever witnessed. Go here, and simply enjoy the great food. Believe the hype, because Sushi Bistro is simply great.
Sushi Bistro is by far the best sushi restaurant in all of SF!! I eat a lot of sushi and have been looking for the one place that has fresh fish, creative rolls, variety, friendly service, and a good value and Sushi Bistro has got it all! After having eaten there, I don't want to go anywhere else. I want to try all the different rolls on their menu and will keep going back for more. I can't rave ...
...Better yet, sensational everything!! My friends and I decided to try this place after reading the reviews on CitySearch. Let me tell you, all the reviews were right. The extensive selection of rolls blends a variety of flavors that puts a new and unqiue spin on the sushi experience. But if rolls aren't your thing you can't go wrong with any of the nigiri or sashimi. The fish is so fresh it mel...
Sparklingly fresh fish, interesting rolls, 9 different kinds of sake, and wonderfully friendly proprietors make this-- far and away-- the best sushi restaurant I've found in SF, AND it's a great value for the quality of food. (Ebisu had better run and hide!) And for the non-sushi eaters among you, the tempura is crunchy and greaseless, the teriyaki flavorful without being goopy, and the free coco...
Sushi Bistro is a great place to go! You must try: HOT LOVE and MR. BROWN. This is very unique and smooth! This is now my fav sushi place to go better than nippon/episu/kitaro/and sushi on boats!
Debbie also has good recommendations so just ask and i'm sure you will get a smile. Xin, the chef, will create something 'interesting' and tasty if you just ask him. price is a little pricey but the ...
I love Sushi Bistro!! I am a huge fan of sushi, and this is the place that keeps me coming back.
The Unagi melts in your mouth, the Salmon makes you moan, and the Baby Lobster handrolls take all of your troubles away.
The place is very chill. The chef, Xin, is such a great guy. You'll want to hang out with him at the bar. Debbie, will serve you everything with a genuine smile.

... I walked past Bistro and I saw Xin walking out with a box of fish. I said, "Hey, aren't the fish supposed to come IN in boxes and go OUT in bellies?" He replied, "I don't like this one, so I'm sending it back." I had found my sushi place...
-- P.S. Get full on sushi at lunch for $7 --
I don't eat sushi anywhere besides Bistro because there's no point; Xinwei & Debbie serve up the freshes...
The food is wonderful, the variety is incredible and the atmosphere is warm and friendly. SF is lucky to have them!
Owners Xin and Debby may be new to the SF restaurant scene but they have been in the business for a long time and they know how to keep their customers coming back for more!
On a recent business trip to SF my fiance and I were happy to find that now with their new restaurant,...
Eating at Sushi Bistro is like being on vacation in Hawaii! This place has everything-excellent food, friendly service and a lively atmosphere! I have enjoyed lots of delicious traditional sushi favorites like the tempura, spicy tuna hand rolls, Caterpillar roll and Rainbow rolls. But it was the new items and different types of fish that really make me want to go back for more. Sushi Bistro's m...
