Red Lion is one of my favorite places, and I enjoy every opportunity to visit... it's cozy, great drink selection, the food is excellent, and the service has always been superb.
The folks who posted less than five stars must have been unlucky...
Ordered the veggie samosas, had to send them back twice because they were stone cold in the center. Waitress was pleasant. Order the "sushi grade tuna salad" and it had to be send back because it was way over cooked. Good beer and wine selection and good atmosphere.
I had a lot of fun hanging out with my friends at the Red Lion Pub! The service is excellent and it was a relaxed and fun atmosphere.
I had a simple salad with chicken breast as I'm not as adventurous as some. I tasted my friends dishes (the Shepherd's Pie and Chicken Tikki Masala) and everything was so flavorful! The desserts were by far my favorite. The bread pudding and the chocolate mousse...
Been to RL many times. Great for a rowdy fun night or an intimate date night out.
There is a great range of food here--everything from traditional English fare like Shepherd's Pie to the Chicken Tikki Masala, which I think is the best thing on the menu. Except for maybe the desserts. The bread pudding is amazing, and the chocolate mousse cake (I forgot the actual name) is the best I've had.
Fresh Newcastle is VERY hard to find in Houston. I have never had a bad tap from here. I had a small tear form on the corner of my eye when I saw the Old Speckled Hen on draft too!! The fish and chips are AWESOME.
The food was absolutely delicicous. I had the quesadillas and dessert following. Both dishes were GREAT!! I have never had quesadillas taste so tasty. I will definitely be going back for another fabulous meal. Also, the service was good. Bartenders, waitresses and staff was very friendly and accommodating. Nice Ambiance as well.
Red Lion is great to go to on a Sunday and enjoy a pub lunch and a few pints. Ther service is amazing and they have a huge variety of food on the menu. The fish and chips is the BEST in town!
This Pub has a lot to offer from great entrees to amazing desserts, salads and appetizers!!! They have a good amount of options and convinations. Their staff is friendly and the place is very clean, chic and with cool music. They are a great option for fresh food and awesome times with your friends or even to mingle.
Check it out!
The Red Lion Pub is a great place to relax and unwind. The beer selection is excellent, as is the food. The Shepherd's pie is delicious, and the desserts are amazing. Give it a try! You won't be disappointed.
I love the authenticity of this place... Owner/operator Craig obviously puts in a lot of hard work at the Lion.
While they're all good, my favorite dish has to be the Pan Seared Chicken Breast... Yummy!
Oh, and it's a nice place to relax and throw some darts, too.
See ya there!

I love this place! When I come here, I always know I am going to get great service and moderately priced drinks. While they are a bit limited on my wine of choice (Pinot Grigio), they more than make up for it in the variety of beer and food. I especially love the fried brie over mixed greens. The crispy outer shell gives way to a slightly mild warmed brie. Paired with the tart vinagrette and bitt...
We love this place. Great food - try the curries on Wednesday evenings, a choice from 7 curries and a pint for $16.
Every week night finds some special, Steak, Burger, Curry, Meatballs, Fish & Chips, and all top notch food.
The beers's a tiny bit pricey - although you can always drink "lite" beer for next to nothing. Loads of choice, real British Ale and a British Boozer atmosphere to match.

This place provides a great atmosphere to go out with friends and have a good time without sacrificing the taste buds ; ) Good food and great customer service!!
This is a great curry house! Reminds me of some of the ones i've been to in London. So happy to have found this gem in the middle of Houston. A job well done by the owner and staff. Make sure to drop by during happy hour where the crowd is diverse and the specials are delicious!!
The Red Lion is very unique pub especially for Houston. It is cozy and quaint inside and has a great selection of Indian and English food. The house wine is excellent and so is the service! The wait staff was very friendly and their service was prompt. We also had the pleasure of meeting the owner last night and he is a very friendly, and nice guy. I will definitely be coming back!
I stopped in with a few friends after hearing one of them rave about the place constantly.
The owner introduced himself to us, and chatted with us quite a bit. What a great guy!
The drinks were great, and the Shepherd's Pie came out very quickly, and it was delicious!
My friends and I had a great time and are planning on visiting again soon.
I went to the red lion pub on April 9 2009 and had a great time! Not only is the food and service amazing, but they have a wide selection of import beers to choose from.... The lighting and music was perfect.... The owner came to our table and introduced himself .... He was very entertaining! I will definately be back soon!!!!
Going to the Red Lion has become a favorite past time for my mate and I. Especially since its daily dinner specials serve up some variety and don't hurt our pocket book. I don't usually write these types of revue's, but after taking note of my persistent satisfaction with our neighborhood joint, I thought it greatly appropriate.
Curry and Steak night are our favorites! Its hard to find go...
I love the red lion...one of my favorite places to relax and people watch...very creative menu and really friendly staff! I always feel welcome and at home...
My friends and I enjoy this place a couple times a month, usually for the deals to be had on curry (Wed) or steak (Thu) nights. The steak is generally terrific -- quality filet cut in lieu of the cheaper ribeyes found at many steak nights around town -- and the curry is awesome. Lamb keema is my fave. However, watch the extras. Even with a steal of a deal of $18.99 for a full steak dinner, add a ...
Burgers were good and cheap. Their happy hour beer prices are average, but they had a pretty good deal on their house wines.

As a working class lad from Northern England, one?s palate has become pretty refined when it comes to assessing the finer points of a plate (or newspaper) of fish and chips.
The Red Lion consistently serves up a fantastic version of this classic British staple. The fish (cod) is always fresh, firm, and flaky and the batter has the near-perfect marriage of thickness and textu...
Go for Curry night on Wed! We did not know there was such thing as English Curry until our friends brought us to Red Lion. Many beers on draft. Great atmosphere.
Right well where do i start. upon entering this bar you are almost overwhelmed by its
comfortable and cosy atmosphere with it's patriotic British theme and an over grown
forest that im sure used to be a patio out front, you are greeted in by which i have to say
are the slowest bar staff to step foot in a bar and sometimes the Red Lions stuck up and
usually drunk owner who could bore confessi...
I posted a critical review a couple of months ago - the food had gone way downhill.
I was reluctantly persuaded to return last week and I'm so glad I did.
A few welcome tweaks to the menu and the standard of food back to what it used to be - excellent. My husband and I have been back twice since and I'm so happy that I can enjoy my favorite pub again.
a pub experience...it almost feels like it's a franchise operation. take bennigans and make the food and drinks actually very good and authentic. the crowd is older - late 20's and up. families dine here too. they had pims at the bar -and the bar tender knew what it was, so there. as for happy hour, mostly 30-ish and up. upscale attire, but showing up in anything that reeks style (torn jea...
The Red Lion has everything that I would ever want in an English Pub and more. The reason I say and more is because I spent the first thirty years of my life in England and the last thirty in America looking for something comparable. Frankly, I found England's equal and then some. Plus, having Craig as mine host is the icing on the cake.
Red Lion--Great food. Authentic pub atmosphere. I...
I have been frequenting the Red Lion for about 3 years now. The food is so incredibly tasty (thanks to Chef Kevin and crew) and the service is awesome. Great experienced bartenders. I feel at home the moment I step inside. The curry is out of this world (a choice out of 6 different curries and a pint of beer $14 on Wednesdays!!!) its hard to compare to any curry house in town. I definitely wo...
The Red Lion Pub is a great place to go whether you want a great beer, glass of wine or a fantastic meal. The waitstaff are always friendly and attentive. The bartenders are fun and the atmosphere is alive and comfortable.
Being a female in houston, I find it difficult to go to bars/pubs/restaurants on my own. Here, I love the company, food and wine. If you love British fair, steak, burg...
My girlfriend and I found this place a couple of years ago and we've been hooked ever since.
From the moment we walk through the door the experiece is fantastic. The staff are friendly, and go out of their way to get to know the customers. The beer is great. The menu is varied and the food superb. Try the Curry, or the Fish & Chips, or maybe the Thai Fish Soup.... keep going, you'll get through...
This is a great pub and is First Class whether you measure it by the food, the beer quality or the friendly service. The owner and the staff do a tremendous job and are very friendly and responsive. The curry is excellent and the whole menu is imaginative and frequently refreshed. I thoroughly recommend you try it (just leave me a stall at the bar)
If you thought you'd had Fish & Chips in Houston, think again. These are the best I have found. Also try the curries, Kevin has done a great job in creating an "English" curry. Staff are part of the family and go out of their way to make you at home. My local back home in the UK needs to come and take a look :-)
I feel for the owner of this place.
He's done a remarkable job where others have failed. For as long as I can remember, nothing of merit has ever succeeded at this location. I recall when it first opened, that I and my friends commented on how cheap the pricing was and how good the quality of food was.....now it's 5 years later and all some want to do is talk about the prices being to high and t...
The red lion could use a few pointers from texans. If you're going to open and english pub in texas open one. if you're going to open a pretentious engish pub then make it worth the $. This place could be either a great bar or a great restaurant but the kitchen isn't open late and the bar is slow by 11. make a decision and it will prosper.
I used to go to Red Lion every weekend. The food was great, the service was awesome and it was always fun. I'd bring parties there, recommend it to everyone....NOW I've seen a huge change. it seems like a totally different bar. The service stinks now (the waitresses are RUDE...the past 5 times I've been there! The last time I walked in the bartender just stopped and stared at me and made my frien...
Red Lion is a comfortable pub type place, but it is way overpriced for what you get, even for the River Oaks area. I had a friend who had been a regular but quit going because their prices went up so much. Inflation is not over 10%, but the price increase was. I found that out the hard way. The night I went my friends and I were charged more for our drinks than the prices were on the menu. T...
I have visited the Red Lion pub 5 times, but only because I enjoyed the atmosphere. I found everything to be far too overpriced for what it was. $7.00 for a beer seemed to be the average rate. Wine was around $8.00 per glass. Also, selection was fairly limited compared to other places I have been.
I would only recommend Red Lion as a nice place to meet someone before a date; the ambiance is cer...
This is a place that I would recommend to my girlfriends and manfriends...a great place to hang out with friends to catch up. The food is very tasty as well, my favorites are the chicken tika masala and the fish and chips. Perfect for a date night or to watch a game. Bonus - Staff is friendly and attentive too...
The old British-style atmosphere is great and the bar selection and patio are as well. The food however, is a bit too expensive for a pub. Sure it's better than what you find in many bars, but the traditional British dishes are all $12 and up. I'd go back, but not for the food.
Have you ever tasted Chicken Tikka Masala!!! well what are you waiting for. this great dish paired with one of their variety of beers can let you enjoy after a hard day at work. with a diverse crowed always open to a great conversation. the service is phenomenal. go enjoy you time and the great people. do not expect to be surrounded by people be prepared to meet someone that might have someth...
I love the red lion it's a great place to go to unwind after work or anytime of the day. The beer selection is amazing, as is the food. The fish and chips are def worth blowing your diet for the staff is friendly I've always had a great time here.
This is a good place to turn up just about any time but particularly when the 'Stros are playing. Good service, *great* food and a nice selection of weekly specials (the $5 burgers are not to be missed). You can't go wrong here.
We have always loved the Red Lion.... great beer selelction, good food, freindly bartenders, authentic british feel....Until we went last friday (5/31/08) They have really jacked up the prices!! $16 fish and chips? $7 beers? Just can't do it. We will really miss going to one of our favorite pubs.
We usually go on Monday for $5 burgers. The best $5 burger ever. Everything is fresh made along with a huge pile of thick hand cut "chips". Or you can have the mini cheese burgers for the same price. Great to share. I can't ever finish all of them. They give you four with a mountain of fries. Drinks are a bit pricey but who can complain with the awesome food they have. The waitresses are always n...
My girlfriends and I wanted to try out a new place and experienced a pleasant surprise at the Red Lion. The staff was attentive to detail, and very personable. The food was delicious, I recommend the Chicken Tika Indian dish, incredibly authentic. Drink orders were accurate and the bartender was very accomodating to making different martinis. Now to the serious scrutiny. There were plenty of...
Coming from Ole' Blighty, I need to have my dose of nationalism at least once a week. Usually my medicine is taken in a potato clinic not far down the lane from this establishment. As my withdrawal symptoms got worse I took the old girl to the Red Lion for a spot of hearty nourishment and a few jars. My experience was thus:
1. The table service was very typical of an English Pub.
2. The...
Well what can I say that has not been said already? This is a gem of a place!! Great food (better than most Chef-driven restuarants!), nice staff, beautiful interior and got to be the cleanest ladies bathroom I have ever experienced :-)
The owner was flitting from table to table and was quite attentive. He made myself and my daughters feel comfortable and welcome. Rachel was our server and was b...
I have patronized the Red Lion many times over the last six months and have not been disappointed. There is a large flatscreen for watching soccer and a small tv above the bar. The food is quite good, the beer selection on tap and in the bottle is extensive enough for all the beer drinkers I know and the atmosphere is very fun. There are 20 somethings through 50 somethings, many a UK accent ev...
I met my friends for girl's night on Friday and had a ball! Craig the bartender was entertaining and the mini burgers and french fries were a big success. We also enjoyed the cheese plate with our wine and beers...good selection and very generous!!
This place has a great vibe and we will definitely return.
We called 30 days in advance to see if we (group of bulldog owners) could sit on the patio with our dogs. They said sure just call a 1 week in advance with the final number of people and dogs. We called 1 week in advance with the final numbers. We were set for 9 pm on August 10th. The owner called at 7 pm on August the 10th to cancel. The time didn't work. Why did they wait until 2 hours p...
I was part of the Meetup group that was under the impression that we would be having a dinner at the Red Lion on the evening of August 10, 2007. Our group had been planning on this for over a month. I had previously had a lovely experience at this location and was DRIVING in from Victoria to attend the event. Only to be informed on the road that the event had been cancelled at the last minute....
Food is a bit heavy, and everything is on the pricier side, but what a relief it is to see and English pub that has more British beers to offer on tap than just Guinness (brewed in Canada, btw) and one or two other brands. Good job actually representing with some real English beers! Nice cushy booths... a little smoky. Love the pictures in the bathroom.
From the moment you walk through that door, the entire staff makes you feel at home. Although British food is not well-known to be good, their food is just perfect -- from greasy burgers and quesadillas to great healthy salads. The place is great for every age group and you don't feel too young or too old to be there. Although it is a smoking establishment, it is not like the typical smoky and...
Red Lion did a great job taking of our happy hour crowd, the servers were very friendly anf did a great job. Our drinks were full and the service was very friendly. A great place for a happy hour, and a even better place to enjoy a relaxing evening. Good drinks and great service.
Arrived Thursday night about 10:15pm. It was kind of crowded for a week night, I thought. But then again, this is the highest rated pub in Houston, so sure, why not, if everyone loves this place so much it would be crowded. Great English pub atmosphere. The crowd seemed mostly mid-20s college students. Nice beer selection. Friendly waitresses, great food. I had the shepherds pie, and I must say, ...
Red Lion is still one of my favorite places, and I enjoy every opportunity to visit... it's cozy, great drink selection, and the food is excellent.
Makes me homesick just to walk through the door. Layout, smell, ambiance. Beers on tap, couple of TVs, friendly staff and customers, outdoor patio, great food. Took some fresh off the plane English friends there, curry, roast beef (and YP) and fish and chips all great. Most draft beers were off this Sunday for some unknown reason but Guiness and Harp sustained us. Provided they keep the draft bee...
This pub is a true gem. I am addicted to the mini burgers and the martinis make a nice combo! Great portions and the staff is friendly, nice surprise for a local bar. Looking forward to the holiday decor, the fireplace room looks lovely.
Nice decor...weird owner!! Food was ok but not cheap. Parking is difficult...bathroom was filthy the night I was there
We went to the Naughty Nurse/Dirty Doctor Halloween Party and had a fabulous time! The food was the bomb, the patrons were HOT and it was a good time to be had by all.
The bartenders/waitstaff are the best and the food is always wonderful! We have a good time every time we are there w/ Thursday Filet night being our fav! Keep it up, Craig. You have a great place and it's a wonderful neighborhoo...
My friend and I came in on a Wednesday night, and the place was hoppin'. We waited more than a few minutes for a table, but Craig (the owner) made sure we were not forgotten. He introduced himself and checked on us several times as we sipped our drinks at the bar, then again during dinner. I ordered the mini hamburgers topped with a mountain of fries (gasp!). My friend had the fish and chips. You...
I met the owner Craig while doing some computer work for him, he was great to deal with. I was very impressed with his attitude and the wait staff Rock! My friends and I enjoy the happy hour and beer selection. Stella Artois is it! Stop by, you will be happy you did.
Good beers, somewhat pricey, gets crowded quick. lots of UK and commonwealth expats. pretty good food friendly staff.
After London in 2005,I read H magazine on London's best Fish and Chips in Houston. What a surprise to find The Red Lion. I was taken by its authentic taste of Burgers and Fries,Fish and Chips,Roast Beef /Yorkshire pudding,Steak Night, I could go on forever! The Food isGORGEOUS! Better than London's .Had my first Stella beer there too. A perfect hang out with GREAT food! The waitresses are Brits an...
When we went here on Friday there was maybe 10 people in the whole place. 3 different waitresss standing around doing nothing and we had to wait 10 minutes just to order a beer!!!!! The selection was terrible the prices were too high and the waitstaff was just plain rude!!!! I refuse to go back there!
Love this pub! Not like anything we have seen in Houston along the pub scene! Great drinks, yummy food + the bathrooms are so clean and the English lavender lotion is a nice touch. All my friends enjoy the atmosphere whether watching the Astros or sitting on the patio! Great waitstaff, looks like they actually are having fun working!
The staff seem too snobby. This place wasn't worth the bother, by any standard.
Great British bites and perfectly potable pints reign at THE RED LION, a River Oaks/Montrose crown jewel. Absolutely affordable and overly ample specials are offered each night. Regularly these repasts range from "Tradit Brit" - fish & chips, Scotch eggs, Cornish pasties, shepherds pie - to curries, poppadums, steaks and all their fabulous fixins. Superior Scotches abound as well as mae...
If you like laughing out load and having fun with your friends or you like grabbing an intimate corner, this is the place to be.
If you are a woman you will love the sexy spunky bartender as well as the best bathrooms in houston. If you are guy you will love the excellent selection of good beer and the pretty women surrounding the bar.
Its a great place to me old friends or make new ones.
The Red Lion has become a favorite spot of ours. They have wonderful indoor AND outdoor seating, a dart board, incredibly good food, a huge selection of drinks - and that classic British pub feel - it's a highlight of Houston. We're so glad we discovered it!
Super comfy place to have some drinks and a bite to eat. The nightly specials caught my eye in a recent ad and I ventured in one evening to try the Curry. The Naan bread was real, you could tell they went all out to make authentic. My waitress said the chef is actually from England! This is my girlfriends new place for girl's night out, $4 Martinis on Mondays is a winner.
We usually try and make it to the pub on Sunday's--great relaxing place to sit in the fireplace room have a bite and catch up with friends. These guys really make a yummy burger and just tried the brie appetizer--nice. Always something new on the beer menu to try--nice to see seasonal beers and the wine list seems to get better. Love the new Chilean wines. Great prices too.
I was shocked at the Filet on Thursday Steak Night, it was wonderful for $15! My girlfriend was thrilled with her champagne for $5...it was such a nice surprise to find this pub in our neighborhood! Cheers to the owner--he is doing a super job. Its about time someone made it in this location, looks like the Red Lion has found its home.
My girlfriends and I have met several local cool men here. Very low key, neighborhood, best music ever!! Drinks rock and so does the owners wife. She was making sure the bathroom was clean--too sweet! Good bites and comfy atmoshphere. A # 1 local pub where we can enjoy life. Great martini's on MOndays!!! Mary the waitress rocks!!
We stopped by after work Monday and found a nice treat...Martinis were $4 all night and they were terrific. Not to mention the sweet bartender who introduced us to another customer at the bar...we all enjoyed cheering on the Astros!!! This place is a nice find near my home, finally a bar to watch games, talk and eat good food....we are thrilled!! Not scared to sit on the toilet here..cleaner than...
As a displaced Brit in Houston it's important to have a "local", and the Red Lion fills that role admirably. It has a real, hands-on landlord/owner,Craig Mallinson, attractive, efficient and friendly (nice change that) bar staff, who remember your name and your favorite tipple, and British food, cooked by a genuine British chef, Ben. I won't say too much about their much-praised fish and chips ex...
The Red Lion is the epitome of the English Pub - charming and comfortable, furnished with wood paneling and cozy booths, and the fireplace is very welcome on those few chilly evenings in Houston. It has a full bar, with over 40 single-malt Scotches, to complement the more than 20 beers on-tap, and a food menu that offers a great selection of British pub favourites. The sausage rolls are delicious...
Red Lion offers the best of England within a local drive. The owner, Craig, came up and introduced himself without any prompting. His menu and beer selection is far and above the best I have seen and enjoyed in a very long time. Exceptional service, and cold beer, it doesn't get better than this. And Craig is actually from England.
My friends and I went to the Red Lion for the first time last Saturday and had such an AWESOME time! The atmosphere was laid back and what we enjoyed most was that we could HEAR each other talk! You can't get that anywhere else. We sat back, had a few glasses of wine (Roshambo Chardonnay---highly recommend!), had great conversation, and enjoyed the demure ambiance. We never lacked for anythin...
While I had already known that The Red Lion is a great place for meeting friends for drinks and traditional pub fare. I had not expected though to have a great steak in a pub. I was impressed by the quality and value. It's also a great bar to have a conversation with new people as well. By not having 20 tvs showing everything from baseball to every soccer event known to man (as is the case i...
This place made me smile from the moment my girlfriends and I walked in--comfy surroundings, cute customers, great mini burgers and friendly bartender! The patio was perfect for our girl's night out....we look forward to trying the filet on Thursday's Steak Night---These guys are top Notch! They have not forgot anything, even tampons in the bathroom! Wow! Not like other pubs, this is a true winne...
I have visited a bar or 2 in my day and never have found a greater place than Red Lion. So nice to unwind with friends, great friendly staff, food is hands down the best ever! The atmosphere is so calming after a long day, you will enjoy.
Since the demise of the Ale House, the area has lacked an authentic, accommodating pub space. This is by far the most welcome addition to the neighborhood's pub/restaurant offerings. The pints are full-sized, the mixed drinks expertly made, and the food consistently well prepared. It is clean without being slick, and the service is friendly and prompt. Now if only they opened for lunch . . .
This place is the most unique, new establishment in town. Not only does it differ from your run-of-the-mill Houston bar, it stays true to its roots as an English pub.
Great Happy Hour prices and an extensive selection of wine, scotch, and beer help as well.
We had the most delightful time. Very warm and the service was great. Love the Scotish eggs, they are the BEST! And Sunday Brunch is awesome as well!!!! Always look forward to going back. Great place to meet friends after work!!!!!!!!!!!!
Better than the Richmond Arms. Best food I've had since leaving England. A proper size pint is a winner as well
I was stuck in rush hour traffic, saw the bar and decided to see what it looks like. WOW! It looks like I imagine pubs to be. The beer was great, but the Scotch selection is amazing. This is a class establishment!
This place looks and feels like the English country pubs I'm used to in the UK! Dark wood and red leathers - plus a huge fire place which has been damn nice with the recent cold snap.
Good selection of English beers and a killer menu of English and American food. Friday's Fish and Chips remind of the belated Ale House.
Nice patio out front and lots of parking.
The staff is a friendly mix...
This place looks and feels great! Cozy, friendly, 20 oz. pints, good food, and surprisingly, a really nice patio right out there on Shepherd.
Ok all you Beer snobs who can't stand to drink a Bud - you should be happy with a wide selection of British brew on tap.
