In some ways, this place is a hole. The chairs are uncomfortable. The speakers in the bar sound like a rusty trombone. On busy nights, I've seen cleaner restrooms at Cheeseman Park. But hole or not, it's a tight fit for the up and coming progressive community thriving in Antique Row. Antique my heiny!! What a misnomer. This neighborhood is flowing with young blood, teeming with all kinds of stuff....
I love that they have veggie frendly food that tastes great. They have awesome happy hour and their raz margs are fabulous! Home-made bottomless chips and salsa for $1...can't beat that anywhere in the city!
I'm lost. Why does this place get a crowd? Surely there can't be that many white folks with no taste in their mouth (and I'm Italian, so I put myself in that category).
Bland, unimaginative, nothing close to authentic Mexican. There's a Taco Bell 50 feet out the door and it comes closer to real Mexican food than this place.
And the margaritas are a joke. You'd be better buying a bottle of ...
Warned by a friend that the food at The Blue Bonnet was a joke, off we went to this former landmark anyway. The food was amusing, but the house margarita was hilarious. If this is a Margarita, then I?m the the King of Pop. The drink was a massacre, Sand Creek on the Platte. I thought I?d stumbled into Tony?s Meats by accident, given the butcher job here. I mean, it was OFFAL! If there were a ma...
Quite honestly, I have absolutely no clue how this place stays in business or how it manages to get good reviews in the newspaper! I have been there a total of three times over the years, primarily because other people wanted to go there. The first time I went there, I found it to be marginal, nothing special. The other times were poor. The food is obviously not made to order and it reheated by m...
My office used to be near Blue Bonnet, so we would reluctantly go there on occasion. The food's not great; it's cheap Mexican food (I use the term loosely - nowhere close to authentic). You have to guess the kitchen is mainly equipped with microwaves and can openers. However, it has a convenient location, and a fun atmosphere.
Very mediocre, which is unfortunate because its right in my new neighborhood and I consume alot of mexican food and drink. Industrial style food and beverage prep makes for a disappointing product which grows old quickly, both literally and figuratively. ( Seriously, margaritas on tap? ) Theres nothing better than a freshly mixed margarita, and sadly, The Blue Bonnet mass produces theirs, and th...
This restaurant is a nice place to go for a large gathering of people. The place is really loud and thus doesn't work for a nicer dinner. The food was great but the service was very average. The margaritas are good, but certainly don't compare to many other places. Overall, a good place for a quick, casual meal, but I would plan somewhere else if you are looking for something nicer.
Both of my experiences at the Blue Bonnet Cafe were really bad. This place is a chamber of culinary horrors. The salsa is runny, the chips are stale, the piles of half-melted yellow cheese left me bloated and uncomfortable, the green chile is red and runny, with fatty and gristly pork remnants, not lean like other places in the neighborhood. The margaritas were watery and bland. It's almost like ...
If you're looking for a gourmet mexican restaurant...go somewhere else. But if you're looking for great margaritas, food, service, and a place to eat without spend an arm and a leg, go here! Someone on this site complained that the bartenders don't use triple sec in their margaritas...who cares! Their margs are good, potent, and...wait, do you really need anything else? The bar and wait staff...
I got dragged back in here recently. This joint?s been around for awhile but then, so have I. Although I no longer patronize the place, I remember the days when they?d use turkey in the chicken items to make a few extra pennies. Not too long ago, actually. Quite a long and storied history of nickel and diming. They charge for chips and salsa. And unless things have changed recently, this is th...
For us, it was just another medicore Mexican restaurant. It was an overcrowded restaurant with good service and food that was ordinary. You can get the same food at any chain mexican restaurant in Denver. The price is comparable to other mexican restaurants so don't travel downtown just for this one.
Used to be really good back in the early 90's. Still pretty good but their service and wait time could be better.
The old marketing adage states ?You don?t sell the steak, you sell the sizzle.? Well said for many types of businesses, but unfortunately for the Blue Bonnet Cafe, restaurants actually do sell the steak. This place reminds me of a Denny?s menu; where the pictures of the food look great but the actual product is another story altogether. After eating at the Blue Bonnet several times over many yea...
A friend of mine & I stopped in for lunch today. Our water came quick, our chips & salsa soon after & then our drinks. I wasn't into having alcohol today, so I sampled a strawberry limeade. It tasted kinda funky, not bad, just not good. The busser came by and filled our salsa dishes and continued to top off our waters before they had a chance to go empty. That was a bonus! At most Mexican r...
Love, love, love this place! We have been going to the Blue Bonnet for 20 years (a short amount of time in the history of this restaurant!)
The Blue Bonnet has survived many ups and downs of this neighborhood over the years and continues to thrive and impress! From the old building to the newer building, character abounds. The food is consistently great, the margharitas even better! Great pr...
The food was average. The ambiance was average. I had heard so many good things about this place that I tried it with a friend as my husband said I wouldn't like it. It looks much better from the outside than it is on the inside. I suppose it's an old neighborhood hangout. Nothing special in my book .... but always worth a try.
My margarita was not so good and when I noticed the bartender was squirting them out of a soda gun like a soft drink, I just about s%@t! You could throw a monkey back there to do that. Plus, who knows when or where these margaritas were actually made and by whom; or what was (or wasn?t) in that drink. I wonder if anyone ever even bothers to ask. Talk about a compromised, if not potentially adul...
One more Denver taco-slinging cash cow that specializes in seperating newly transpanted yuppies from their hard earned fun tickets. Mediocre at best. Bring the Rolaids and for some extra fun on the way home, don't turn on your headlights and drive on the wrong side of the road. Welcome to the Queen City of The Plains. Have a real cool experience.
I love going here, they have the best Chili Rellenos in town!!! The nice crispy ones, not the soggy tasteless ones you find in a lot of places. I love their salsa and chips that everyone gets to start the meals!!! And they also make a mean Strawberry Daqueri
I used to frequent this place when i lived in the neighborhood. Being back in Denver recently, I stopped in for a little nostalgia. What a mistake! What I remember as being a fun, cheap neighborhood joint has somehow evolved into a gay Chile's or Chevy's, complete with the obligatory tootie-fruitty drink lists and prices to match. The food hasn't improved and the decor is downright strange. The ...
This place SUXS ! the food is horrible. I dont know why people cater to this place! The location is the only good thing about it.
Into each life must come one meal far worse than all the others, a meal that makes you wonder not only how such a meal could exist, but why? A ?White Whale? of a meal, if you will. Well, I saw my White Whale when a friend took me to the Blue Bonnet Cafe for a celebratory dinner. I asked the waitperson for a pre-dinner margarita, specifying my favorite tequila. I was anticipating a delicious conc...
I have no idea how this place has so many good reviews it has to be the WORST mexican food I have EVER had!?!?!?! This place is straight gringo mex the motto is "oh we have bland tasteless food. Ok load it up with cheese maybe that will make it taste better." Sorry that didn't work it is still revolting! The chips and salsa were bad, a step above pace picante the margaritas had no alcohol and...
I'm not sure why this joint is getting such great reviews. The food is bland, and the noise level is off the charts.
I had passed this restaurant 1000 times going from the downtown area to I-25. Now I wish I would have stopped there sooner. The pitcher of Golden Margaritas was excellent, and very reasonably priced. I have tried green chile in almost every restaurant I have found that offers it, and this was some of the best. The portions were large, but not too large if you know what I mean. I would not call th...
Try the chocolate banana empanadas! They rocked my socks off. The pork carnitas were good, but I'll avoid the shredded beef next time.
If it wasn't for the entertainment value I received from this mediocre meal, I would be disappointed. The enchiladas I ordered were so lacking in substance, literally, that it was almost funny. "Where's the beef?" would be a serious understatement. "Where's the triple sec?" would also be an appropriate question here because there was none in the margarita I ordered. Unbelievable that a Mexican r...
Our kids love this joint. Plenty of video games and machines for them to plug their (our) quarters into and keep them busy while we enjoy ourselves. They love the jukebox and also the wall in the bar area with the goofy looking cut-outs of funny looking people (clowns, I guess) hanging on it. They constantly nag us to "go see the freak show circus at the boo bonnet!" So if you want to keep the ...
I've lived in Denver for over 10 years - the Blue Bonnet has been a staple for decent Mexican food since the first day I arrived. I've had good experiences as well as poor. The food is definitely not great by any stretch - however, it is American/Mexican comfort food. The chips and salsa are far above average and I often get them for take out. The menu - typical Burritos, tacos, enchiladas,...
This is my favorite Mexican spot in Denver. The quality of food is always great and the service beats many other spots. The prices are amazing for the quality. I think everyone should try this spot!
I knew we were in for it before we even got seated. The panhandler at the front entrance and the rude host who's English was about at the same level as his manners were only a preview of the disappointing meal we were about to experience.
The food itself was about as authentic as that place on West Colfax that has cliff divers and serves cafeteria style food. It came to th...
Just went to Bluebonnet last night for a quick dinner with my wife. The service was good as it wasn't too crowded, but the food was just bland and not good at all. There is much better mexican in town for the same price, don't waste your time going here.
The moment I walked into the Blue Bonnet I just knew it was going to be a bad experience. The person who directed me to my table didnt even say hello or ask how I was. When I got to the table, I waited 10-15 minutes for a server to come the table. When the server finally came around, she took my drink order and didnt come back with the drinks for another 5-10 minutes. She came back with the drink...
My experience @ the Blue Bonnet was not good. The food was average and when the waitress told me that the Patron margarita I ordered was really not made with Patron tequilla, that did it for me. Apparently, the margaritas are pre-mixed with a basic house tequilla and then they add the call tequilla to the house mixture. The bottom line is, when you order a premium margarita, you actually get a m...
My friends and I recently had a ladies night at the Blue Bonnet and had such a wonderful experience. The food was spicy, filling and inexprensive and the margaritas were fantastic. I loved the prickly pear margaritas, the guacamole and the fajita tacos that I ate. My girlfriends are I will defintely visit the BB again and recommend it to other customers.
After living in Denver for my whole life, I decided to try the Blue Bonnet, a place I often hear about. The experience was wonderful. My party and I were seated promptly and the bus boys kept refilling our chips all throughout dinner. This place is family owned and it has a very warm feeling when you walk in the door. My combination platter and nachos were fabulous and I will definitely go again ...
Is this place for real? As for the food, the combination platter which I ordered invoked visions of a Darwinian catastrophe, with totally indistinguishable items floating in what looked like some type of primordial soup(green chile and cheese?). One bolt of lightning and this plate could have sprouted legs
As for the room where we ?dined?, this loud, irritating atmosphere ce...
I have been eating at the Bonnet for over 20 years and I really appreciate their attempt to keep things the same for local who keep returning. The menu has changed to include more items like fish tacos and barbacoa and the service is always friendly and fast. Every time my family and I return we are so happy to be back. Keep up the good work!
My family and i went for a fun, relaxing low key dinner and ended up having one great evening out.
The service is fast and friendly, our waitress was very helpful with menu choices and favorites. The atmosphere is relaxed but lots of fun and very kid friendly. I will definitely be back again with either my family or with other friends for some adult beverages and more great tasting food.
This is my number one choice for Mexican restaurants in Denver. The food is delicious-chicken chimicangas are the best. The atmosphere is fun and casual. Been going there for many years.
Since 1995 I have been sampling a wide variety of Mexican & TexMex Restaurants in Denver. The BB is known for it's award winning Mexican food, but those awards are from years gone by. I have had Burritos at the BB with a cold center and have never been thrilled about any meal I have eaten there. Las Delicious is far better for the eating experience!
This is the best mexican restaurant in town for me. We have been going there for 20 years and always have a great experience. Thats probably because the owners are always walking around asking if everything is great and taking care of any problems. I always take our out of town guests here and meet our old college buddies there.
I have been here on numerous occasions at the insistent of some of their loyal customers and have always been disappointed. Having grown up in the Southwest I love Mexican food but there is nothing Mexican about the food here. The food is bland and swimming in flavorless sauces. This is one of those places that continues to pack 'em in though and I just don't get it. Even Benny's, which is me...
Take a chance and spend the extra $ on an upscale tequilla with Grand Marnier!!!
Chips and salsa flow freely, so, you will be filled up. The food will take you longer to order than it will take to get to your table. Staff is great. If it is crowded, take whatever they give you. There's really no ambiance here, unless it's a nice day, and you want to wait for a patio table. The patio still s...
I have eaten at Blue Bonnet several times in the past. Each time I keep going there the quality of their food has gone downhill. If your in the mood for a spicy authentic green chili this is not the place for you. I do have to say though, they still have some of the best table salsa arround. The actual dinner plates have gone down in quality. If I do decide to return here it will be for a qu...
Okay, so right off the bat we have to pay for our chips and salsa which kind of annoys me. That's what I go to Mexican restaurants for, the free chips and salsa. And the waiter doesn't really even ask, just sets them down. I had the chicken quesadillas which were awful (I don't know how you can screw that up), and my husband had something (don't remember what) that he thought was pretty good. ...
Well...a lot of folks here complain about this restaurant not being authentic. This is true, the food is an Americanized version of Mexican (also true with about 90% of the Mexican restaurants in Denver). For what it is, however, I give the Bonnet a thumbs up. For a very reasonable price, you get a great meal. The atmosphere could use a little work; it's about as casual as it gets. I have eaten t...
Went there with 2 friends - very negative experience. We did not order more drinks after eating our dinner, just ordered some dessert, when the manager came and told us to move to a smaller table as he had people who needed our table. The place was half full, and one in our party uses a cane so moving was pretty inconvenient, especially since we just ordered our dessert. We assume since we wer...
People who love it think the food is great. You aren't going to get fancy food there, it's solid fare consistently, every time I've been there over the years. The salsa is fantastic and literally everything else I've had here has been delicious, no exceptions. I've always stuck to burritos, tacos, chips/salsa, rellenos, etc. - basic stuff - and the margaritas are perfect. I've read reviews here s...
The Denver area has too many uninspired Mexican restaurants. The Bluebonnet is different - the food is not only spicy but tasty. From the chips and salsa to all the kinds of burritos, you won't be disappointed. Plus, if you like margaritas, ya gotta try theirs.
PROS: reasonable prices, patio available during warm weather
CONS: sometimes lonf wait during busy times
This is an old place in Denver, and you will get that feeling when you get there. Food is very average, not very pleasant on the presentation, and the cheese they use is like plastic. Also, not authentic in any way. Go to north Denver and seek out a real Mexican restaurant. This is bland food, over rated. I've tried this place several times over the years and can't see the attraction.
As a bigtime salsa fanatic, I had to share with everyone that Blue Bonnet has the best salsa I've ever had - anywhere! Why it's great: 1. FLAVOR - this salsa is unrivaled in flavor, with chunks of onion and green chilis and what I believe is fresh cilantro bits in a wonderfly textured tomato sauce. 2. Unlimited refills (waitresses come around with pitchers of the amazing salsa and refill as many ...
I'm amazed to read such bad reviews, yet see a place last for so long with consistent crowds. Ive also never seen such opinioned people when it comes to "what is good Mexican food." Personally I think The Blue Bonnet is really good above average Mexican food. This is the kind of place you can go to on a regular basis, good food, prices & one of the best environments. In fact, The Blue Bonnet is ...
I just went to the Blue Bonnet to meet some friends, and I was a little worried after reading some of the reviews. I was therefore, pleasantly surprised.
I ordered the combo platter - shredded beef burrito smothered green, crispy chicken relleno, and enchilada. The burrito was quite good. The green chili is definitely NOT Stokes.
They claim to make their own fresh enchilada red sauce, ...
I like to talk to natives of the area to find good food. We were referred to Blue Bonnet and it has become a family favorite. The food is consistently good. Atmosphere - well you know the food is good because they don't come for the decor. There are so many good things on the menu that is always a tough choice when it comes to ordering.
With all the choices for good Mexican Cuisine in Denver why anyone would choose The Bonnet ... The cuisine is very average at best, and the service and long wait for this quasi authentic "Mexican" makes the experience even less enjoyable... Goes to show you though, if you can stay in business long enough you can gain a loyal following.
I have been going there ever since I can remember. My dad and my grandfather would spend their days and nights there. I remember the old building and when they tore it down and built the new one. Now my daughters have had their experience of the Blue Bonnet since even before their births. We will always be coming there as long as we can.
I went to Blue Bonnet to drink and watch the game, but I should've stopped there because I decided to eat, and thats one thing that I shouldn't have done because it turned out to be one of the worst places for Mexican food I have ever been to.
Everyone has a patio for the warm weather, but Blue Bonnet is best in the winter. Much more intimate and a good party atmosphere. I like a place where a crowd wave can bust out at any minute...
If you're looking for Tex-Mex, don't drop by the Blue Bonnet. The food is excellent, the service prompt, and the prices are cheap -- clearly the best Mexican in Denver.
This is possibly the worst Mex food I have ever had! Their version of green chili enchiladas was swiming in stuff that no true Mexican cook could call food. The stuff is cheap because the ingrediants are even cheaper.
Tender Vittles would taste better! Bad service, bad food!
Well, at least they can't screw up cold beer. The food is quintessentially average. I was expecting much, much more, but this place is about as wonderful as a night out at Chi-Chi's, only the food isn't quite as good. I love a good guacamole, but this place hacked it up. I was burping up the nasties well after the meal. I really, really wish this place would take it's wonderful location and ...
My friends raved about this place. I realize everyone has their own preferences... This was not mine. I won't ever go back. I just didn't find the food that great. I grew up eating homemade Mexican food... sometimes using plants that were growning in the yard! And we thought they were weeds! I like trying new things... This just wasn't for me.
This place has some of the worst mexican food in Denver. Taco Bell is far superior.
Everything tastes the same (canned cat food)
and smothered in the same sauce. I live within walking distance (West Wash Park) and I'll drive 10 miles before I eat at this place. If you want real Sonoran Mex style try El Tejado on S Broadway near Harvard or El Paraiso on Harlan south of I-70 or El Jalisciense ...
One of THE worst "Mexican" restaurants I've ever been to! The beans are horrible, the green chile is just plain weird (like doctored-up Campbell soup!) and the rice is majorly funked up. I'm totally a Mexican food freak, so I'm not dissing Blue Bonnet because of one "bad experience." I've been in Denver for 20 years and to lots of Mexican restaurants and this place tops the list of the worst. I w...
On Valentines Day I took my girlfriend out to this place because she loves Mexican food and this is one of the better Mexican food places in town. AS my girlfriend was going to the restroom, cooks were yelling obscenities (very, very vulgar) that just happen to speak Spanish. It brought her to tears. I would never take a date to this place again, or I would make sure she does not speak Spanish. G...
I don't think the food is that good! The green chile
is not nearly as good as say the Brewery Bar II.
Excellent margaritas, and Mexican Food at an excellent value. A+
They are not La Fiesta, not like the now closed Don Quixote, not like Chubby's Inc, not like the other metro area Mexican restaurants where your digestive system needs a day to recover. I love it that way, but the ones I go with don't appreciate the trauma. The food is consistently good, but mild. Service is excellent. Drinks are ok, but reasonable. A good value overall.
The chicken chili rellenos, salsa, and margaritas are the best I've ever tasted. Blue Bonnet is my baseline for other mexican restaurants. I've been going there for at least 15 years.
The drinks are the only thing that is good in this establishment.
The food is white mexican food, the green chili tastes like stokes green chili from a can.
I went there with a male friend just recently and had a great time. It was the first time I had been there since I moved away from Denver. I was with a fine man and good food and margaritas, what more good anyone ask for. Their green chile is almost as good as mine and that is a plus all on it's own.
The last few times I have been to this resturant, the food and service has been awful. Please lower the rating of this resturant to a 0.
Blue bonnet is one of the best Mexican resturants in the denver metro area. The salsa is great and the environment is swell
The best feature is the extreme attentiveness - you'll never be low on drinks or chips and the food comes out within minutes!
The food is good. The margaritas are terrific. Fast service. A good place to meet friends for dinner.
I love this place! I'm surprised by the negative reviews. This isn't Morton's by any means. But, it is great food, no velveeta, lots of real cheese, the shredded beef burrito is awesome no fat pieces in it. (this coming from a pretty picky eater) Great margaritas, good service. 80% of my outings there are followed up by one of the owners coming personally to the table to see how everything is. Yo...
This restaurant has all the atmosphere of my middle school cafeteria - almost. In all fairness to the staff we were seated promptly and attended to nicely. We've read good things about the food. Only we couldn't stay long enough to eat. The tables and chairs appear to be rejects from local flea markets. I'm usually game to prop up a table leg... but when the chairs feel rickety, well, that's just...
The worst food in the city. Some people seem to love this place but I can't figure why. If your into canned beans and velveet then this is the place for you. I believe you win a prize if you can find an actual piece of meat on your plate.
great food on a hot summer night and for a hot summer day have a couple of pitchers of margaritas. after a few of these you won't even notice the sun.
Reasonable prices - friendly service, sometimes too crowded, great blue margs!
