After reading all the acclaimed reviews of Hell's Kitchen, I decided this would be a perfect place to wine and dine my wife for our first Valentine's Day dinner together.
We were impressed with the ambiance when we walked in since it looked romantic and the friendliness and service of the staff. We actually thought that we were going to have a great Vday dinner!?
My wife and myself agreed...
I ate here last week with my boyfriend...started at the bar with some amazing cocktails..me..wajito..my fella..a beuno anejo margitita..bartender with the moustache was super friendly and helpful!!!! Dinner was great but what bothered us most was the creepy guy with the chef whites(chef maybe??) who stood at the end of the bar for most of our meal and just "surveyed"the dining room...Why isn't he...
just okay....ambiance. just okay...food. just okay...service. tried the steak tacos, sirloin, guac, the sea bass and a few other things with friends. again, the food was okay but not the best guac or the best anything. i was expecting progressive, flavorful mexican but received bland mexican that i could make at home. again, its an okay place if you're hungry and happen to be in hell's kitchen, b...
I ate at Hell's Kitchen on Valentine's Day and had an awesome time. Everyone on the staff were very nice and helpful. When the manager stopped by to ask how everything was I couldn't stop gushing about the food. My favorite dish was the Tiger Shrimp. My boyfriend had the Lamb and it was out of this world. If you have a chance to stop by the bar for a drink and apps make sure Rick is working. H...
We had an 8pm reservation, were seated at 9:15, received our first nibbles at 10pm. No apologies, misleading wait updates, and no attempt to make the situation better. When we spoke with the manager, we were chastised and the blame was placed on the table seated before us. The evening ended with the manager sarcastically making fun of us, the bartender criticizing my drink order and being told we...
Myself and 6 other people had 6pm Wednesday night reservations here. We were there in time for the reservation, greeted by a friendly but rushed waiter, got drinks, apps, dinner and coffee. Everything was wonderful, although the app sizes were definitely on the small size for the price. After the coffee was served you could tell they were rushing us.. the check was brought before it was asked ...
Honestly this is my favorite restaurant in NYC. The atmosphere is great, the food is phenomenal, the service is lovely and it's just overall an incredible restaurant/food and experience. Ordered the sea bass, the guacamole as an appetizer, the banana empanadas for dessert. A really most delightful experience and it's relatively inexpensive as well. Don't forget to try the Sangria as well. You'll ...
the people who sat next to us were harassing us and making racial jokes while we were sitting next to them. It was an awful dining experience. especially in nyc??! felt like i was in mississippi. Its a shame because the food was good but it was just unbearable especially the finance dooshes harassting us during our meal. Dont understand why hells kitchen attracts such trash. really not cool
Hell's Kitchen is one of our favorite restaurants for dinner when visiting New York City. You really cannot go wrong with anything on the menu...and the drinks are not so bad either.
My over all experience was very nice. A few of my girl friends met up for dinner and drinks and we wanted to try a new place and decided to try Hells Kitchen. It ambiance was cool. The food was great and so were the drinks. The only problem that I had was our waiter was not the nicest.
If you want to make reservations for a Saturday night, plan ahead of time for a 2 hour dinner and leave no room for lateness because you will certainly be reminded by the host or manager that you are running out of sync with their reservation cycle in the middle of dinner. The waiter/waitress was unfriendly, neglectful and moreover useless when asked for food advice; luckily, the menu descriptio...
Try the Margaritas and munchies. Best value @@@@. The burrito was good and the service even better.
Not pricey.

This restaurant is awesome-the decor is dark, dimly lit, very noisy but fun too. always crowded and you have to make a reservation unless you get there @ 5pm. Last time we were promptly seated and started off with drinks and black bean dip. Apps include goat cheese empanadas which were cripsy and greasy (excellent). The duck and shrimp with guac as main courses are fantastic. I would go back e...
My girlfriend and I went last night and it was a great experience. The ambiance is perfect and the food is a very good mix of eclectic and traditional. The toughest part was choosing among about 10 delicious-sounding choices. I would definitely go back. I don't know where the bad service reviews are coming from, although I do notice that most are from more than a year ago, so maybe management...
Definately worth the wait!
Went for dinner there on Friday night and everything was fantastic. The margaritas are tasty and strong. My guest had the capirinha and she said it was the best she's had. We started with the lobster fritters and the calamari. The calamari was definately spicy and full of flavor. We both preferred that over the fritters, although both were great. For entree I had...
the food is OUTSTANDING, and it might be one of my favorite restaurants in the city (and i am a big food snob). the appetizer they serve gratis is great...toasted pita of some sort with a black bean flavorful dip. the appetizers i've tried haven't been so grand, so steer clear from those. the SHRIMP is my absolute favorite. the STEAK is awesome with those yummy potato things and sauce. the LAMB i...
I went here for a birthday party on a Friday night, 8:30pm. 12 people were expected but a bunch of us were caught in horrible traffic. By the time all of us arrived, it was about 8:35pm. We apologized profusely to the hostess and waitress (we had already called to tell them we were stuck in traffic) and they promptly informed us that we had to sit down and hurry up because we only had the table u...
Ate there last night with visitors from Germany. It just wasn't worth the wait. We joined the waiting list at around 7PM and were told that it would be about 1/2 hour before we would be seated. It was an hour before they got to us and, in the meantime, we observed that other groups who joined the list after us were seated first. When we inquired about our place on the list, the hostess told u...
If a restaurant is going to be named after the famous dining area of the city, it better live up to the expectations. Hell's Kitchen lives up to its name and more. I walk by this place everyday, so it was about time I gave it a try. OUTSTANDING mexican food, great drinks, and moderate price. I will definitely bring friends here next time I stop by.
Food - awesome!!! service - moslty good! Just waitresses are little bit strange!! Are they "height" ? it looked that they are flying.... but friendly though ! Might be hard to get a table! After work - full! For a date - perfect! Romantic, cozy and fabulous food! enjoy ;)
Who needs the Taco stand when you have $12 tacos here? All jokes aside, the food is very good but incredibly expensive. Fusionesque Mexican should only be so spendy as it is tasty. Recommended for reservations as the place is not large and standing in line is a futile exercise.
I loved this place. I had the Halibut which was a customer-favorite and it was so good I ate it all without having the thought of offering my friends to try. Nuff said. The Sangria was wonderful and I accidentally knowcked over my (empty) glass as I was putting on my coat to leave and they were so nice about it and didn't make a big deal. The staff here is very professional and courteous and ...
I'm sure I'm setting myself up for a future disappointment by saying this, but Hell's Kitchen always delivers, every time. The drinks are great, the good is great, and though I read in the Citysearch review that the service can be slow, I've never experienced that. In my numerous trips there, the host or hostess has always kept us up to date on when we can expect our table. HK has quickly beco...
The food here is always excellent ! And the servers very nice and helpful. It gets pretty packed every night, so I would recommend reservations. Definitely get the Tuna Tostadas for an appetizer & any special they have with duck ! The chips & black bean sauce they have on every table are to die for. They are warm & slightly sweet, half bread half chip & they are addicting ! Also the pan seared ch...
This place is wonderful! I went to Hell's Kitchen today for lunch with 7 colleagues, and left extremely satisfied! The waitress and waiter were extremely attentive and fun! Their portions of food were large, and the festive decor was simple, understated, yet impactful! I love the fact that they give cornbread and bean dip as an appetizer! And the tuna tostadas were A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. I would definite...
I bring my friends to Hell's Kitchen all the time, and after waiting forever for a table, they all love it. The steak last night was very well-spiced and perfectly cooked, and the seafood is consistantly good. It's far better than what usually passes as Mexican. We've also downed more than our share of margaritas; I especially like mango. The big con is waiting for a table, since there are no...
I have worked in hotels, bars, restaurants my whole life & even owned my own. Reagarding this establishment -- menu looks great, decor colorful & lively, it all stops there. First try -- gave name for a dinner table, went to the bar, the bartender, and I've bartended in faster paced establishments, pointed at me & as I began to ask what kind of flavored vodka they serve, obviously too much for ...
Despite having 3, yes 3, glasses of water dumped on me by the waiter and the lack of response by managment, I really enjoyed the key lime martinis and the food was excellent. Just make sure not to sit with your back to the bar and all should be ok!
I went with a group of 10 and besides the water, the service was fine if a little slow.
I like this place: The food is always good, the frozen margaritas are awesome, and the service staff is usually good. My only complaint is that I was there on two separate times at just after 5pm and thirsty for a drink, but they weren't open yet. They should open earlier!
Hell's Kitchen has consistantly been the best restaurant experience I have ever had in New York. I've been there many times, and I have never been disappointed by any facet of this restaurant. Food: amazing. Service: perfect. Ambience: perfectly suited for the space and versitile enough for a first date or large party. And killer margaritas!
My friends and I went here and had a wonderful experience. The service was incredibly attentive and accomodating. Food was excellent. I'll definitely return!
Among NYC restaurants that gussy up Mexican food for Gringo foodies, Hell's Kitchen is among the best. Offering less expensive, better food and drink than Rosa Mexicana and a modicum of comfort and courtesy missing at Mexicana Mama, Hell's Kitchen is worth a little trek.
Staff was unfailingly accomodating and polite.
Chef has a rare deft hand with the deep frier as evidenced in the pita-l...
Can I say good food, friendly service and a relaxed atmosphere all in one! No reservations were required, however the small space means you most likely will need to wait a bit.
Margaritas need some help - may be the cheap tequila. The food is hot, hot, hot to trott if that's what you like. However, will aim to please on the spice scale.
Prices definitely match the quantity and quality o...
i used to be a fan of this place-the service was consistently slow, but the food outweighed the service. as of late though(maybe change of ownership)the food quality dropped with the menu change and the service got worse. when they brought the wrong dish (their mistake), they insisted that i pay for it-giving me a lecture "at restaurants, u order, u pay" with an attitude. what was worse, HE was t...
Food here was generally ok... considering the insanely long wait to get a table. Not that the place is overly packed, just that the restaurant manager/greeter wouldn't sit people in a timely or organized manner. There were empty tables, but somehow the maitre d kept on disappearing for long periods while people waited... only to turn up and tell waiting guests that they can't be seated yet.
...
The food was creative. The service was ok, all in all an average restaurant with above average prices.
I now know why friends have panned this place so often. To start with, the maitre'd has the most condescending and arrogant attitude towards patrons. Within an hour I witnessed him being confronted by no less than 4 different parties for his inept seat allocation and long wait. The food is decent and table service a hit-or-miss in the 3 times I've been there.
Not worth the hassle... 9th A...
The food is fresh, inventive and fun. The place and location are no frills. The staff have been known to be a bit abrasive in trying to rush you out by leaning over and taking your plate or asking you multiple times if you're done when you're in the middle of a conversation. However, it is the food that will bring me back and I hope the last occasion of bad service will be my last.
Excellent restaurant, appetizers and all four of our dishes were tasty and inventive. Lots of flavor but not too heavy. The shrimp with plantains was the table favorite. The place is fairly small so you can't find a private table, but it didn't feel overly crowded. It has modern earthtone decor with low warm lighting. They don't take reservations after 7:00 during the week so we had to wait ...
Had dinner pre-theatre on saturday. Got me out just on time. The portobello mushroom roll app. was fantastic and huge and the rock shrimp app. had a ton of flavor. The avocado leaf tuna entree was great (a lot of heat, the way I like it) as well as the pulled pork special. Good cheap wine list and awesome raspberry margaritas! Honestly just as good as Mesa Grill for about half the cost.
the appetizers were tasty and creative, though a tad small. the main courses were incredible. the desserts even better. even the pre-appetizer dip was delicious! i will definitely go back. the prices were also very reasonable. a great value! much better than many higher priced restaurants in the city.
We went to Hell's Kitchen a while back for pre-theather dinner for 6. It's a small place with an intimite appearance and trendy ambience. But, it is a little loud for group conversation. Their dishes were more fusion than most "Pan-Asian" places with a variety of influences and were very innovative with nice presentation. Prices were moderate, and I would definitely go back. We didn't need r...
My college roomate and I stopped in to have a pre-theater dinner at Hell's Kitchen and we were not disappointed. The food was delicious and creative and the prices were very reasonable! I would highly recommend this great place!
Great food- nice Mexican/southwestern influences on traditional American cuisine. It's loud and a bit packed, but the food makes up for it. Not recommended for a date, but a good place to go with a friend or two.
This is one of my favorite places to eat in the city. The food is terrific! It offers the perfect combination of sweet and spicy. My favorite? The grilled shrimp and guacamole on plantains with jalapeno puree and deliciously sauteed veggies with tortilla strips. IT'S AMAZING!! Their fresh fish dishes make you moan. And the free cornbread/bean dip appetizer rocks. There's a reason this place is...
Although small, croweded and loud, the food is so amazing that I didn't mind the ambience. Try the duck empanadas for appetizers- they come with a fig mole sauce. Amazing.
Small and cozy, but can be hard to get a table around theatre dinner times but it is worth a wait. Try the seared tuna appetizer with gauc on chips-excellent!
After requesting to be seated at an empty table, the waitress (who was so terribly burdened when we asked to move from the bar to the table to have dinner) asked us to get up from our seats and wait for a smaller table because a party of 3 just walked in... and the table was for 4. How exceptionally rude!! I have never been seated and then asked to get up and wait because a larger group came in!!...
Outstanding, fantasic food!!! What a talented young chef. I highly recommend it.
A friend and I made reservations for 6:15 this past Saturday, and although she was running a bit late, I was seated at the table while I was waiting. The food was excellent. The opening shrimp "cake" was very tasty and full of flavors. My friend's chicken quesedilla puts others to shame, and my pork loin was quite good. The service was excellent, as was the maitre'de, which I was surprised ab...
The shrimp appetizer was wonderful, great avacado salsa, great everything. I had the special quesadilla -- artichoke and fontina or something, and it was pretty awful. But everything else, from appetizer to dessert, was great. Yes, the reservations policy is weird, and yes, we had to wait 30 minutes past our time to get a table even when half the restaurant was empty, but who cares when the water...
Despite the reviews that the staff was bitchy, we still went. The four of us had a super friday night dinner. The place was packed, and we secured a 7pm reservation (no reservations past 7pm). The margaritas are amazing, best I've had in the city. If only it were closer to the East Village! We shared the shrimp, crab and duck appetizers. All fantastic. We had the steak, the halibut and the lamb f...
I find it a real bitch to find a great place in the theater district that's got super-great food. This was really refreshing and fun and I plna on goign back for sure. I only wish it were bifger and not so hard ot get a res! The food has to be great and I'll forgive them everythign else, but everything else was really good to - the waiters were helpful adn not annoyingly firnedly, i like the d...
Haven't eaten here in awhile - went for Memorial weekend - sat at the bar because I was dining by myself - felt comfortable doing so. Had the special tamale and the lamb with blueberry compote - both very good. It wasn't a scene mainly because it was late and holiday weekend. Other times I have been - it has been too full of pretenious silly loud people - which makes dining, either alone or wit...
In a city of many mexican-themed restos here's one standout. Surprisingly good from appetizers to entrees (and usually entrees diappoint me). Don't eat too much of the cornbread/bead dip since it only gets better from there. Biggest issue: noisy.
Sue Torres is an excellent, inventive chef. Her restaurant is so unpleasant, however, that I can't recommend it. 1. The reservation policy is confounding. Long waits, and then the staff rushes you. 2. The staff is unfriendly and unprofessional. Yesterday we weren't greeted at the door. After finding the hostess, she held up her figure to tell us to wait while she laughingly finished her story to ...
