I just moved to Greenwich Village, this summer. Bleecker Street to be more specific. Upon helping me move into my apartment, my father who went to college at NYU, went searching for his old stomping grounds. All he could find was the RED LION, to which I met up with him for drinks. My father actually met a singer there who he had known over 20 years ago. That was the first time I ever sat and had...
I have never ever walked into a bar ever in this whole country and heard Chris Mars playing!!!!! And when I told the bartender he shook his head like he was cool as a tray of ice cubes and told me he done all the music hisself and that Chris Mars was God. Like no Biggie. I told him I just wanted to use the can. (I don't drink no more. Sorry folks.) And he told me take my time: 'This is the longes...
My first trip to NYC, on a drunken hiatus from reality I started drinking in the Red Lion at 5 in the afternoon and did not leave until the lights went on the next day. I wish that sober Sally would have left drunk Sally a note that said mind your purse, glasses and cell phone. When I woke up the next day and realize everything was gone I thought I left it in the cab. But when I went back the nex...
I've just back into dating pool recently and started internet dating. I was actually supposed to meet my date at the Lion's Den, but walked into the Red Lion by mistake. It was my date's choice. ANd after he was informed that there is no more Lion's Den, he came and met me at the Red Lion. I was didn't know what to expect but the two bartenders George and Brian behind the bar totally put me at ea...
The Red Lion is a great place to spend a casual afternoon or evening with friends. With sports in the day and live music at night, I'm also comfortable going alone. The bar staff is friendly and efficient. George, Joe and the other staff members create a great local pub feel - which is no small feat in this city. I don't hesistate to drag my oldest friends, my newest colleagues and everyone i...
It's been 8 months since I moved to L.A. Last weekend I went back to New York for a visit. I went to NYU and lived in the East Village for ten years. Of course I went to all my usual haunts, but the one that made me feel most at home was the Red Lion. Totally unpretentious, great energy, and a good mix of people. The bartenders were perfect- New York charm, attentive, remained cool under a demandi...
3 of us from the UK spent 2 nights in NYC, with no prior knowledge we asked the taxi driver to take us to some bars, we ended up here. Unfortunately we had booked elsewhere for the day after (New Years). What a place! Grabbed a table and received excellent service - the second our drinks became empty they were filled again. Thank you excellent barmaid! Several hours later it came time to pay ...
I've been attending Red Lion bands off and on since '97. We attended December 17th (2008), Wednesday for the live jazz. Awesome! On your feet sax, drums, trumpet dancing! Wednesday evening shift male bartender was cold, moody, snappy, rude, and extremely arrogant. This coming from a former bartender, in the Village, of the female variety. Politely asked him for water, we had to several time...
really good cover bands if you are into live music. In the village so if you wanted to go somewhere else there are hundreds of places. The drinks are not that expensive and the bar atmosphere is great. I have been there a lot over my tenure as a New Yorker and I highly recommend for a good time....late nights there rock
The Red Lion is a fun place for live music. It is small so you are very close to the musicians. With only a $5 cover charge you definitely get your money's worth. Some bands are just OK but others are amazing. You can spend hours here drinking with friends and listening to a wide variety of music.
As Bleecker Street changes, it's nice to have somewhere like the Red Lion. I will say that we prefer to go during the daytime, as during live music nights it can get crowded and uncomfortable--we prefer the daytime English pub feel.
I've been meaning to do this for three months now. I never even leave these reviews my friend Rachel always does. But - every year the four of us that still ain't married yet take a room at the Ritz Carlton downtown in Battery Park and we see the city like we are tourist and we always crash the Red Lion. We went their 1st because Dawn was dating a drummer in a band that played there and now it is...
I really like the Red Lion, I usually go once a month at least or more to see my favorite band, its a nice venue, nice atmosphere, good drinks (try the choc martini) and the wait staff is friendly and check if you need drinks often., the bands there are awesome, GREAT live music!!
my bf and i were lookin for a cool place to drink and listen to live music and after an extensive search on Citysearch, picked Red Lion. We were very pleased -- the two bands were heard were truly talented, the $5 cover being a small price to pay. We had a few drinks, the price was in the normal range for a place like this in a location like this. I usually hate the weekend crowds in bars but wou...
To be fair I went there to watch sports, and it sounds like there's quite some nightlife there, but I can only judge what was in front of me. There was a bar section in the front and tables in the back. The front has your regular bar TVs and I was there for football (aka soccer). Not as much as fun as Nevada Smith's, whose huge wall screen is accessible to anyone who can squeeze past the crowds.
friendly, affordable and a little cozymantic.... great date place with very talented musicians... casual
This is one of, if not the best pub I've been to in Manhattan. The drinks are reasonably priced, the bartenders are wonderful, and the live entertainment is great quality. They even do some Bon Jovi on occassion. I have been to this pub on many occassions and several different nights during the week. It's always a great time. Highly recommended.
Every couple of months or so, my two girlfriends and I take a trek from where we live in Providence into Manhattan. On one particular shopping jaunt we fell into the Red Lion. We were thirsty and hungry and kind of lost. Behind the bar we found one of the nicest bartenders, George. Who not only made us the best bloody mary ever, he gave us great directions and made a resevervation for us at Mario...
This is the place to catch some football (NFL & soccer) during game-time and some great live music. Famous touring musicians play here occasionally late-night, people you probably wouldn't recognize but are on tour with major acts. Last time was there was the 1st thursday in January around midnight, and we caught a really fun rock band called "Rolling Bones" (ha!). There were a ton of good looki...
Went on a Thursday night with 4 girls. Everyone liked the food, it was tasty pub fare. Beers were cheap, too. The staff was friendly, and the live music was really fun! It's in a great neighborhood to start out the night at and then bar hop.
I've only been to Red Lion for drinks.... but always have a good time. It can be a little loud when they have live music (i love to go just to hang out and have conversation...) but the music's always good, so no complaints. plus, the atmosphere is understatedly-posh. maybe even, dare i say, romantic.... :) always very nice bartenders, too.
I had a mighty hangover from the night before. Walking to the groecery store in my hood I saw a sign that said: Homemade Bloody Marys with bacon bits and a Guinness head. I never even heard of bacon in a bloody mary. I went inside and there were three people at the bar already drinking the same thing. The bartender this cool dude named George filled a huge pint glass with Absolute Pepper and toma...
I went there on Tuesday night and was surprised to see it being full! Great place to listen to new awesome bands. Great value and good service.
This was the first place my friend brought to in New York after moving here from Mass. I haven't wanted to be shown any other bar in the area. This place is our regular bar and we are there at least once a week. They have the best bands, best atmosphere, and of course the best bartenders. We absolutely love Ann and George! They make the best drinks and have the best personalities that keep u...
If you want a great night out Red Lion is sure not to disapoint.
Great Live Music everytime I have been and lets just say the crowd is HOT.
The interesting thing about this venue is that it seems to appeal to all age groups everyone is there for the same reason- this place is great.
The staff is super friendly and service is prompt and efficient.
If you like having FUN - THIS IS THE BAR FOR ...
As a self-proclaimed party girl..I must say the red lion is one of my favorite bars to (you guessed it) party at. The vibe is low key but very fun. Good people. Good music. Good chicken caesar salad. My out of towner friends loved it. Jack, the bartender, took great care of us. Great guy..not to mention incredibly attractive. Next time you're there..ask him to make you party juice. For...
The Red Lion is the reason I keep coming back to NYC.Quality music, quality company and quality service.Dave,Anne and Joe are the best bartenders in NYC. c u again soon guys. Robbie
Forget all these comments about cover bands. If you are a Brit in New York and want to watch International Rugby, this is the venue. On Sat mornings in Feb and March, by 10am this place is turning away punters willing to pay $20 to get in. Penty of screens, so no matter what corner you get squashed into, you'll see the action. If Americans want to watch 80 mins of sport with only a 5 min interval...
Hey just wanted to clarify - there has been a cover charge every time I have gone to Red Lion, but only about $5. That said, the bands are great and the drinks are cheap. The crowd is a good mix, so all always feel welcome. One warning - you may have to save your conversations for in between songs, because some of the bands can get a little loud! All in all though, a great place.
For a Wednesday night you can't ask for a better night out. The first time I went there I was on my own and I felt like I was with fiends. Not rammed out with people so great fast service and full of great looking girls. They have live bands every night. No cover charge to get in and the bad playing (Guss and the Allstars)
FANTASTIC. Do yourself a favour, if you're close by go there!!
5 dollar cover to get in on a Sat nite isn't bad for a band that was pretty strong. Played lot of U2, Floyd, some Zep. Pint were about 6 bucks. The place drew an NYU type crowd....and I guess with good reason, it's somewhat close.
I live in Chicago, but due to work, I'm in New York City two weekends out of every month. One night I fell into the Red Lion for dinner and a beer and having been going back ever since. They have live music everynight of the week till four in the morning. There's this band called the Mike Tate Band. I've heard them three or four times now. They do a cover of Cold Play's Yellow that is fantastic. ...
Red Lion is probably one of my favorite places to just go, unwind, have drinks, eat, AND listen to great live music. Its an Irish Pub in the heart of the Village. The bartenders are very friendly, even the manager/owner comes out and makes sure everyone's having a good time. You can sit at the bar, or get a table and theres plenty of room, and when the weather is good, you can sit outside as we...
I absolutely love this place. They always have great music, their live bands are up and coming artist that can bare the title stars. I regularly go to see Surrey Lane (Rock band) and to see some of their blues bands. Sorry i don't recall their names. But over all a great place to hang out with friends, drink and eat some finger food. The people that go their are the friendly type, no aristicratic...
If the band is good, this is the best bar in NY.
Pretty cool place. Food is good, service varies but is pretty good most of the time. Some good musicians play there. Would like to see Greg Aulden, Mike Tate and Carlos Trapp more often.
This is the quintessential Village Hangout and always features a dizzying array of talented singer/songwriters and bands. Casual, Friendly, Funky, Slightly Divey, Always Fun. An absolutely great place to hangout with a group of friends.
Do Not Miss Wednesday Nights.
