Not a good place, unreliable, bad service I live in South Austin so have given this place many chances. Sometimes it is average but the last 2 times were so bad I just can't keep it in the rotation anymore. The service is always bad. Slow, forget things, you have to find them for your check etc. Which if the food is great that can be seen past but the last 2 times we had to send meat back as it didn't seem fresh and had a funny smell. WORST hamburger (ever) We could not believe this was voted best burgers on citysearch. Did the people who decided this EAT BURGERS ANYWHERE ELSE?! We started doubting that the minute we walked into the dirty/rundown place. As soon as our burgers came out, we knew it was going to be bad. The meat was overcooked, tough, and dry- although it was claimed to be medium. Not completely inedible, but even a fast food burger be... Read More On Citysearchwaxx 3/8/2009
Amazing breakfast This place is a little gem of a restaurant which I found on citysearch when looking for breakfast places. We took forever to order because we couldn't decide on what to get! We finally ended up sharing the eggs benedict, one pancake, a slice of french toast and a side of refried beans and home fries. It sounds like a lot, and it was a lot of variation, but each part wasn't overly sized. This was ... Read More On Citysearchalanah 2/14/2009
Adequate basic cuisine Bakehouse is just the place to meet for brunch on Sunday if you aren't looking for adventure. The menu is basic, and the food is basic, nothing glamorous or pricey. Enjoy the wonderful baked goods, service is just fine, and you usually don't have to wait for a table. See you there soon! Read More On CitysearchCitysearch User 11/26/2008
This was #1?? I was searching for a great place to have breakfast, and was shocked to see The Bakehouse listed as #1! I went there once, and only once, because I would never ever go back. I ordered your basic bacon and eggs, there was no one else in the restaurant, and it took 45 minutes to get my food. The bacon was old - so dry and hard I could not even bite into it - like it had been overcooked then left sit... Read More On Citysearchjweb432 9/29/2008
Flat out terrible I came into the restaurant expecting really good comfort food. When pulling into the parking lot, the place simply looked dirty. Once we entered the establishment, the dirtiness continued. Even the tables that were set for the next customer will still dirty. The decor was simply cheap and lacking.
The restaurant was pretty empty, but the service was horrendously slow. Took forever to get our d... Read More On Citysearchthemoho 9/7/2008
great selection! I came here to try the German food, and found it to be average. The wiener schnitzel could of used some seasoning in the breading, but over all it was satisfying. Service was right on time and polite. The overwhelming collection of international foods is what will keep me coming back. Good atmosphere. Read More On CitysearchPetalsATX 6/9/2008
Love the concept, disappointed by execution There are lots of interesting, delicious sounding items on the Bakehouse's menu. I loved the decor.
However, the overall effect of the food was bland and lacking. My wife's bratwurst was great, but all of the side dishes, including the warm potato salad (which was described as "heaven" by our server) were acceptable, not memorable.
I had a chicken florentine, stuffed with spinach and chee... Read More On Citysearchirishindc71 4/7/2008
Go for the chicken fried steak The Bakehouse menu is way too ambitious. I oder one thing only here: the chicken fried steak. This is the best CFS in Austin and one of the better ones in Texas. The meat is real round steak, not cube steak, and the batter is good. Not perfect like my grandma used to make-but good. The cream gravy is perfect.
Stay away from the international stuff. I do disagree with the reviewer who disliked ... Read More On Citysearchtoppertx 9/30/2007
Yuk! I signed onto Citysearch just so I could review this horrible establishment as my first message!
Fiance and I decided to try out the Bake House since we pass by it daily. We should have kepy on driving. We went on a Sunday afternoon around 3pm. There were no more then 5 tables being used in the whole place and the service was horrible! First server was frantic and sweating on the floor. S... Read More On Citysearchmoniejoy 9/9/2007
Great Breakfasts but good all the time I remember when they opened the Bakehouse. I had a birthday party here. I have seen so many waitresses come and go, but the quality and the comfortable casual feel remains. If you are hungry at breakfast, Carlos' favorite omelette cannot be beat. I do not have to eat again the rest of the day when I order this! Yesterday, I ate lunch here with two friends and we were all quite satisfied with what... Read More On Citysearchrexman 12/22/2006
FEEL FREE IF YOU LIKE YOU STEAK WITH A SIDE OF ECOLI the service was terrible ( maybey they think if you dine alone that you should be ignored). The food was bland , as well as not very fresh. nothing was hot or cooked to order. it was the only resturant that i ate at the whole day and so there was no doubt in my mind that it could have been then only place that made me spend the next day in a half hoovered by the toliet in pain. Terrible Service bland food. I am surprised to see this resturant with this high of a rating I hvae given the Bakehouse a try on 2 occasions and both time were pitiful. No only did the food give the impression it was microwave tv dinners, buit the service was lacking. Less than attentive servers and bored looking hosts topped off the expierence. Very average Not sure how this is rated so high. The food and service isn't anything special. The only advantage is that it's one of the few sit-down restaurants with a bar in the area. Hopefully more people will review this place and give it a more reasonable score. Read More On Citysearchdickypramkus 6/28/2006
Disappointed after reading other reviews The restaruant left a lot to be desired after reading some of the other posts. I have to wonder how it could possible have rated so well after eating there. It was merely average and strictly, well... okay. Read More On Citysearchjeffcaynon 6/24/2006
Great food - friendly efficient staff! My sweetie and I live in fear this place is going to go out of business one day - it's SO GOOD but never crowded! The far South Austin location is definitely off the typical tourist/hipster routes, which makes it a great little neighborhood secret for us, but I do worry that they aren't getting enough business which is why I'm posting.
For those of us a little...ahem...past college age, it's a n... Read More On Citysearchgypsy_song 2/3/2006
Love this place We've been eating there for over 10 years. We feel more comfortable there then any place in Austin. There just aren't many places in Austin where you can talk and be heard, and you can there.
We love the variety, and we really like the value; the prices are so reasonable. They remodeled awhile back, it is very pretty, and we like that too. Read More On Citysearcheaterbunny 7/15/2005
Okay I decided to try Bakehouse after reading the positive reviews, and the prices seemed fair on their website. Their actual menu prices were slightly higher, but not unreasonable. The atmosphere is dark and feels old. However, the prices didn't seem expensive until we started eating. His hamburger was very bland, and my beef wellington was mediocre. My rice tasted like burnt butter. The horser... Read More On Citysearchifiknew 4/23/2005
Hidden Gem We've been going to the Bakehouse for about 7 years now, and it has always been great. Despite another reviewer's critique of some of the upper entrees, many of them are great - the special chicken is wonderful. I also like that you can get couscous as a side grain, and the desserts are out of this world. It does need a better decor and location, though! Read More On Citysearchmadelynlea 2/8/2003
